Fyshwick is a retail and light industry suburb of Canberra and is located east of the South Canberra district. On Census night 2006, Fyshwick had a population of 54 people. It has many motor vehicle dealers, stores selling home furnishings and hardware, and stores that sell goods wholesale. There are also some fast-food outlets. It was named after Sir Philip Fysh, a Tasmanian politician who assisted in bringing about Australia's Federation.

The 1940 Canberra air disaster was an aircraft crash that occurred near Canberra, the capital of Australia, on 13 August 1940, during World War II. All ten people on board were killed: six passengers, including three members of the Australian Cabinet and the Chief of the General Staff; and four crew. The deaths of the three cabinet ministers severely weakened the United Australia Party government of Robert Menzies and contributed to its fall in 1941.

Seiffert Oval is a rugby league ground in Queanbeyan, New South Wales that served as the base of the Canberra Raiders for the first seven years of its existence (1982-1989).
