After an unsuccessful attempt in 2005 to convert Highwood to a home rule city, Highwood achieved home rule status in 2007, facilitating the town's abilities to raise funds and pass ordinances.

Barat College

The college was named after Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat, founder of the Society of the Sacred Heart. Barat College was purchased by DePaul University in 2001, but closed in 2005; the faculty and student body were absorbed by DePaul, and the campus and educational inventory were sold.
