Masters Tournament
The Masters Tournament, also known as The Masters or The US Masters is one of the four major championships in professional golf. Scheduled for the first full week of April, it is the first of the majors to be played each year. Unlike the other major championships, the Masters is held each year at the same location, Augusta National Golf Club, a private golf club in the city of Augusta, Georgia, USA. The Masters was started by Clifford Roberts and Bobby Jones.
Augusta National Golf Club
Augusta National Golf Club, located in Augusta, Georgia, is a famous golf club. Founded by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts on the site of a former indigo plantation, the course was designed by Jones and Alister MacKenzie and opened for play in January 1933. Since 1934, it has played host to the annual Masters Tournament, one of the four major championships in men's professional golf, and the only major played each year at the same course.
2008 Masters Tournament
The 2008 Masters Tournament was a golf competition held at Augusta National Golf Club from April 10–13. It was the 72nd Masters Tournament, and the first major of the 2008 season. Trevor Immelman won with a score of 280 (–8), three strokes ahead of runner-up Tiger Woods, a four-time champion. Defending champion Zach Johnson finished tied for 20th at 291 (+3). The annual Par 3 contest, which is held on the Wednesday before the first round, was won by Rory Sabbatini.
1953 Masters Tournament
The 1953 Masters Tournament was the 17th Masters Tournament, held April 9 to April 12 at Augusta National Golf Club. Ben Hogan shattered the Masters Tournament scoring record by five strokes with a 274 (–14), which stood for 12 years, until Jack Nicklaus shot 271 in 1965. Hogan shot four rounds of 70 or better, and went on to win the U.S. Open by six strokes in June and the British Open by four in July. Through 2012, it remains the only time these three majors were won in the same calendar year.
1964 Masters Tournament
The 1964 Masters Tournament was contested April 9–12 at Augusta National Golf Club. It was the 28th Masters Tournament. A field of 96 players entered the tournament and 48 made the 36-hole cut at 148 (+4). Arnold Palmer, age 34, won by scoring three rounds in the 60s and a final round of 70 to win by six strokes. With this win, he became the first four-time winner of the Masters. This was his seventh and final major victory. This was the last Masters tournament that Craig Wood entered.
1970 Masters Tournament
The 1970 Masters Tournament was contested from April 9 to April 13 at Augusta National Golf Club. It was the 34th Masters Tournament. A field of 83 players started the tournament and 48 made the 36-hole cut at 150 (+6). Billy Casper defeated Gene Littler 69 to 74 in an 18-hole playoff on Monday to win his third major championship. It was the last 18-hole playoff at the Masters; the format was changed to sudden-death in 1976 and first used in 1979.
2002 Masters Tournament
The 2002 Masters Tournament was the 66th Masters Tournament, held April 11–14 at Augusta National Golf Club. Tiger Woods won his third Masters, and second consecutive, with a score of 276 (–12), three strokes ahead of runner-up Retief Goosen. The course was lengthened by 285 yards over the previous year. It was only the third successful defense of a Masters title, previously accomplished in 1966 by Jack Nicklaus and 1990 by Nick Faldo.
1983 Masters Tournament
The 1983 Masters Tournament was the 47th Masters Tournament held from April 7–11 at Augusta National Golf Club. Seve Ballesteros won his second Masters championship and third major title, four strokes ahead of runners-up Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite. Play on Friday was postponed due to rain forcing the final round to be completed on Monday for the first time since 1973.
1984 Masters Tournament
The 1984 Masters Tournament was the 48th Masters Tournament held April 12–15 at Augusta National Golf Club. Ben Crenshaw won the first of his two major titles, two strokes ahead of runner-up Tom Watson.
1985 Masters Tournament
The 1985 Masters Tournament was the 49th Masters Tournament held from April 11–14 at Augusta National Golf Club. Bernhard Langer won his first major championship, two strokes ahead of runners-up Seve Ballesteros, Raymond Floyd, and Curtis Strange. Langer came back from a four-shot deficit at the start of the final round to birdie 4 of the last 7 holes to win the tournament.
1988 Masters Tournament
The 1988 Masters Tournament was the 52nd Masters Tournament, held April 7–10 at Augusta National Golf Club. Sandy Lyle won his first Masters and second major title with a birdie on the 72nd hole to win by one stroke over runner-up Mark Calcavecchia. The final nine holes proved dramatic as Lyle gave up his lead with a double-bogey on 12th after putting his tee shot into the water. Having failed to make birdie on either of the two par-5s, he remained still one behind coming to the 16th.
1991 Masters Tournament
The 1991 Masters Tournament was the 55th Masters Tournament held from April 11–14 at Augusta National Golf Club. Ian Woosnam, José María Olazábal and Tom Watson were all tied at –11 going into the 72nd hole. Olazábal, who was playing ahead of Woosnam and Watson, made his first bogey of the day on 18 after going from fairway bunker to greenside bunker and failing to hole a 45-foot par putt.
