Vilnius (see also other names) is the capital of Lithuania, and its largest city, with a population of 535,091 (809,225 together with Vilnius County) as of 2011. It is located in the southeast of the country. It is the second biggest city of the Baltic states, after Riga. Vilnius is the seat of the Vilnius city municipality and of the Vilnius district municipality. It is also the capital of Vilnius County.
Lithuanian National Drama Theatre
Lithuanian National Drama Theatre (Lithuanian: Lietuvos nacionalinis dramos teatras), located on Gediminas Avenue in Vilnius, is one of the biggest theatres in Lithuania. Since its establishment in 1940, it has staged over 200 performances. The theatre's current repertoire mixes classical and modern theatre with material by contemporary Lithuanian playwrights. The theatre was granted the right its current name in 1998, having previously been known as the "Academical" theatre.
Gediminas Avenue is the main street of Vilnius, where most of the governmental institutions of Lithuania are concentrated, including the government, parliament, Constitutional Court and ministries. The Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (Lietuvos mokslų akademija) or LAS, founded in 1941 as the Lithuanian SSR Academy of Sciences, as an autonomous, state-subsidized establishment serving as a scientific advisory body to the government of Lithuanian SSR. Following the 1991 passage of the Law on Research and Higher Education of the Republic of Lithuania, it was reorganized.
Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre
Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre (LNOBT) (Lithuanian: Lietuvos nacionalinis operos ir baleto teatras) is an opera house and ballet theatre in Vilnius, Lithuania. It was built in 1974. The Lithuanian State Symphony, the Kaunas State Choir, and the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra are housed in the LNOBT. Apart from standard Western and Russian repertory works, the opera also performs national operas.
Battle of Vilnius (1655)
The Battle of Vilnius, battle of Wilno, or battle of Vilna was an attack by Russian and Cossack forces of Vilnius (Wilno), the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, that occurred between the 7th and 9th August 1655, during the Russo-Polish War (1654–1667). The Polish-Lithuanian forces under the leadership of hetman Janusz Radziwiłł were defeated by the Russian army of Alexis of Russia.
