Khavaran was a traditional burial ground for religious minorities, "on the grounds that they were apostates and must not contaminate the resting place of Muslims. " During the the 1988 executions of Iranian political prisoners committed by the Islamic Republic of Iran, the government used Khavaran as the site of unmarked mass graves for those killed.

Shahrbānū (or Shahr Banu), is a personage described to have been one of the daughters of Yazdegerd III, the last Emperor of the Sassanid dynasty of Persia/Iran. Bibi Shahr Banu Shrine is a shrine located near Shahr-e Ray, a southern suburb of Tehran, Iran.
