Geography of Bahrain

Bahrain (from the Arabic word for "two seas" — itself an inaccurate folk etymology for the much older, Semitic term, Bahran) comprises an archipelago of thirty-three islands in the Persian Gulf, situated close to the shore of the Arabian Peninsula. The islands are about twenty-four kilometers from the east coast of Saudi Arabia and twenty-eight kilometers from Qatar. The total area of the islands is about 691 square kilometers, or about four times the size of the District of Columbia.

Bahrain International Circuit

The Bahrain International Circuit is a motorsport venue opened in 2004 and used for drag racing, GP2 and the annual Bahrain Grand Prix. The 2004 Grand Prix was the first held in the Middle East. Beginning in 2006, Australian V8 Supercars raced at the BIC, with the event known as the Desert 400. However, the V8 Supercars did not return for the 2011 V8 Supercar season. 24 Hour endurance races also hosted at BIC.

Riffa Fort

Built as a fort during the reign of Shaikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Khalifa in 1812, while another source claim that it was built during the rule of the Persian Safavid Empire of Iran over Bahrain during the 17th century, the fort was converted into a residence in the 19th century for Shaikh Salman Bin Ahmed (Al Fateh) Al Khalifa. Riffa Fort or it is now named (Shaikh Salman bin Ahmed Fort) offers a splendid view across the Hunanaiya valley.

Zallaq

Al Zallaq is a village on the western coast of Bahrain. Al Zallaq was the home to the Al-Dawasir,AL-Zeabi and Algahtam tribe in Bahrain together with Al-Budayyi'and Juzur Hawar. It is famous for the Al Jazaer Beach (also known as Al Zallaq Beach). The Al Areen Wildlife Park is also near the Al Jazaer Beach in Zallaq. The village has many fishing boats.

Bahrain Bloody Thursday

Bahrain Bloody Thursday is the name given by protesters in Bahrain to 17 February 2011, the fourth day of their national uprising. Bahrain security forces launched a pre-dawn raid to clear Pearl Roundabout in Manama of the protesters camped there, most of whom were at the time asleep in tents; four were killed and about 300 injured. The event led some to demand even more political reform than they had been before, calling for an end to the reign of King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

Al Areen Wildlife Park is a nature reserve and zoo, located in Sakhir, Bahrain.
