Damariscotta is a town in Lincoln County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,218 at the 2010 census. A popular tourist resort area, the towns of Damariscotta and Newcastle are linked by the Main Street bridge over the Damariscotta River, forming the "Twin Villages. " The name Damariscotta is an Indian name meaning "river of little fish".

Damariscotta-Newcastle was a census-designated place (CDP) in Lincoln County, Maine, United States. It designated a concentration of population around where the most developed portions of the towns of Damariscotta and Newcastle meet, generally corresponding to the "Twin Villages" area. As of the 2000 census, the CDP population was 1,751 (roughly half of the combined population of the two towns). For the 2010 census, the area was delineated as two separate CDPs, Damariscotta and Newcastle.

Whaleback Shell Midden is a shell midden, or dump, consisting primarily of oyster shells located on the east side of the Damariscotta River in Maine, United States. Other shell middens are located on the estuary in both Damariscotta and Newcastle. The middens in this area were formed over about 1,000 years between 200 BC to AD 1000 (By 1875 oysters that were once abundant were no longer native to New England waters.

Damariscotta River
The Damariscotta River is a 19.0-mile-long tidal river in Lincoln County, Maine, that empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Damariscotta is an old Abenaki word for "river of many fishes". There are 2,500-year-old oyster shell middens (heaps) along the banks of the Damariscotta River, which occupies a drowned river valley leading to the Gulf of Maine, a large embayment of the Atlantic Ocean.
Skidompha Public Library
The Skidompha Public Library is the public library serving Damariscotta, Maine, Newcastle, Maine, and Nobleboro, Maine. On March 13, 1905, the Skidompha Library Association was incorporated and its collection of 1,476 books was given to the three towns (Damariscotta, Newcastle and Nobleboro) as the start of a Free Public Library. The library was established over the Charles M. Jones Grocery Store on Main Street. The current facility on Main St. opened in 2001.
