The name refers to the convergence of Marietta Street, Edgewood Avenue, Decatur Street, and two legs of Peachtree Street (the south-southwestern leg was originally Whitehall Street, a section of Whitehall was renamed as an extension of Peachtree Street to give businesses south of Five Points the prestige of a Peachtree Street address).

Despite Atlanta's explosive growth in the 1970s and 1980s, 404 remained unchanged for 38 years. However, by the end of the 1980s, it was obvious northern Georgia needed another area code.
