Odessa

Odessa, or Odesa, is the third largest city in Ukraine, with a population of 1,003,705. The city is a major seaport located on the northwestern shore of the Black Sea and the administrative center of the Odessa Oblast. Potemkin Stairs

The Potemkin Stairs (Ukrainian: Потьомкінські сходи, Pot’omkins’ki Skhоdy, Russian: Потёмкинская лестница, Potyomkinskaya lestnitsa), is a giant stairway in Odessa, Ukraine. The stairs are considered a formal entrance into the city from the direction of the sea and are the best known symbol of Odessa. Officially known today as the Primorsky Stairs, they were originally known as the Boulevard steps, the Giant Staircase, or the Richelieu steps.

Odessa Catacombs

The Odessa Catacombs are a network of tunnels that consist of three levels, stretching out under the city and surrounding region of Odessa, Ukraine. The majority of the catacombs are the result of stone mining. The Catacombs reach a depth of 60 meters below sea level. Most of the city's 19th century houses were built of limestone mined nearby. Abandoned mines were later used and widened by local smugglers.

Deribasovskaya Street

Deribasovskaya or Derybasivska Street is a pedestrian walkway in the heart of Odessa, Ukraine. The street is named after Josep de Ribas, who helped build the city, who was its first mayor and who lived on the street. Next to the street is Odessa's first park, which was built shortly after the foundation of the city in 1803 by the De Ribas brothers, Joseph and Felix (Josep and Fèlix).

Vorontsov Palace (Odessa)

The Vorontsov Palace is a 19th century palace and colonnade in Odessa, Ukraine, at the end of the Primorsky Boulevard pedestrian walkway. The buildings were built between 1827 to 1830 by the Sardinian-born architect Francesco Boffo for Prince Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov, one of the governor-generals of the Odessa region. Vorontsov chose to build his city palace on the spot where the former governor general Richelieu's humble house had once stood.

Privoz Market

The famous Privoz market, located at 14 Privoz Street, is the largest food market in Odessa, Ukraine. Privoz began in 1827, when wares were sold from the back of horse driven carts. Privoz adjoined the Stary (old) bazaar (also called the Volny market) the first bazaar in Odessa. Gradually more buildings were constructed as the city grew. In the 1940s zoo animals were moved from the Odessa zoo to Simferopol. Four year old elephant Murza (Мурза) escaped.

Odessa City Hall

Odessa City Hall is the city hall of Odessa, Ukraine, located at the junction of Primorskiy Boulevard, Chaikovskogo Lane and Pushkinskaya Street. It occupies a Neoclassical building, built to a design by Francesco Boffo and Gregorio Toricelli in 1828-34. The frontage features two large statues depicting Ceres and Mercury in their roles as the goddess of agriculture and the god of trade respectively, marking the buildings original purpose as an Exchange.

Built between 1898 and 1899 to designs by Alexander Bernadazzi and Adolf Minkus, it is located in the center of the city, on Pushkinskaya Street, across the street from the Odessa Philharmonic Theater. Moldavanka

Moldavanka is a historical part of Odessa in the Odessa Oblast of southern Ukraine, located jointly on Malinovskiy and Primorskiy city districts. Before 1820 a settlement just outside of Odessa which later engulfed it. Spartak Stadium (Odessa)

It is the home ground of rugby club Kredo-63, and also the temporary home ground of Chornomorets of the Ukraine Premier League while their home stadium is under reconstruction for Euro 2012. Odessa Cathedral

The Odessa Orthodox Cathedral is dedicated to the Saviour's Transfiguration and belongs to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate). The first and foremost church in the city of Odessa, the cathedral was founded in 1794 by Gavril Bănulescu-Bodoni. Battle of Odessa (1914)

For the battle at Odessa in 1941 see Siege of Odessa (1941). The Battle of Odessa was an Ottoman naval attack against the Russian held port of Odessa, Ukraine in October 1914. At the time of battle the Ottoman Navy had just launched a major raid into the Black Sea to destroy the Russian Black Sea Fleet and to attack targets on land. In response to the raid Russia declared war on the Ottomans on November 1, 1914.

Chornomorets Stadium

Chornomorets Stadium is a stadium built in 2011 in Odessa, Ukraine. It was constructed on the site of the old Soviet Central Stadium of the Black Sea Shipping Company (ChMP), which was demolished in 2009. The stadium has a capacity of 34,164 and is the home of FC Chornomorets Odesa. The inaugural match, between FC Chornomorets Odesa and FC Karpaty Lviv, was played on November 19, 2011, and ended with a 2–2 draw. The first goal was scored by Vitaliy Balashov in the 46th minute from penalty.

Gulf of Odessa, or Odessa Bay, is a part of the Black Sea between cape E in North and Cape Velyky Fontan in South. The coasts of the gulf have capes Langeron and Malyi Fontan. In the north-western part of the gulf the estuaries Kuyalnik and Khadzhibey are separated by the Kuyalnik-Khadzhibey sandbar. The Gulf of Odessa is under the influence of the flows of the rivers Dnieper, Dniester, and Danube.

Kuyalnik Estuary is an estuary of the Velyky Kuyalnik River located in the north-western coast of the Black Sea, near the City of Odessa. The area of the estuary is 56-60 km², length 28 km, width 3 km. Average depth about 3 m. The estuary is separated from the Black Sea by broad sandbar has 3 km wide. The salinity of the estuary rage from 50 to 160‰. The mud health spa is located in the south-eastern coast of the estuary, the coasts of the waterbody have sandy beaches.

Dofinivka Estuary, Great Adzhalyk Estuary, or Dofinisvkyi Lyman (Ukrainian: Дофінівський лиман, Великий Аджалицький лиман, Russian: Дофиновский лиман, Большой Аджалыцкий лиман, Turkish: Büyük Adcalik liman), is a brackish water area in South Ukraine, in 12 km to east from Odessa. The water body is an estuary of small steppe river Great Adzhalyk, which inflows to the estuary in northern part. The length of the estuary is about 8 km, width about 1 km.
