Odessa
Odessa, or Odesa, is the third largest city in Ukraine, with a population of 1,003,705. The city is a major seaport located on the northwestern shore of the Black Sea and the administrative center of the Odessa Oblast. The predecessor of Odessa, a small Tatar settlement, was founded by Hacı I Giray, the Khan of Crimea, in 1440 and originally named after him as "Hacıbey".
1941 Odessa massacre
The Odessa massacre is the name given to the mass murder of Jews in Odessa and surrounding towns in Transnistria during the autumn of 1941 and winter of 1942 while under Romanian control.
Privoz Market
The famous Privoz market, located at 14 Privoz Street, is the largest food market in Odessa, Ukraine. Privoz began in 1827, when wares were sold from the back of horse driven carts. Privoz adjoined the Stary (old) bazaar (also called the Volny market) the first bazaar in Odessa. Gradually more buildings were constructed as the city grew. In the 1940s zoo animals were moved from the Odessa zoo to Simferopol. Four year old elephant Murza (Мурза) escaped.
Moldavanka
Moldavanka is a historical part of Odessa in the Odessa Oblast of southern Ukraine, located jointly on Malinovskiy and Primorskiy city districts. Before 1820 a settlement just outside of Odessa which later engulfed it. Until the 20th century the neighborhood was considered a low-income/high-crime part of the town and was famous for its workers' shacks.
Spartak Stadium (Odessa)
Spartak Stadium is multi-functional stadium in the city of Odessa, Ukraine. It is the home ground of rugby club Kredo-63, and also the temporary home ground of Chornomorets of the Ukraine Premier League while their home stadium is under reconstruction for Euro 2012. The stadium was opened in 1928 as a dedication to the 10th anniversary of the Komsomol and was considered the most modern stadium in the city at the time seating 10,000 spectators.
Odessa Railway Station
Odessa Railway Station (Ukrainian: Одеський залізничний вокзал) is the main railway station in Odessa in southern Ukraine. It was built in the second half of the 19th century. It was damaged in 1944 during World War II and was rebuilt in 1952. It is situated in the city centre of Odessa.
Battle of Odessa (1914)
For the battle at Odessa in 1941 see Siege of Odessa (1941). The Battle of Odessa was an Ottoman naval attack against the Russian held port of Odessa, Ukraine in October 1914. At the time of battle the Ottoman Navy had just launched a major raid into the Black Sea to destroy the Russian Black Sea Fleet and to attack targets on land. In response to the raid Russia declared war on the Ottomans on November 1, 1914.
Al-Salam Mosque, Odessa
The Al-Salam Mosque and Arabian Cultural Center are located in Odessa, Ukraine. The cultural center and mosque were opened in June 2001.
