Battle of the Boyne

The Battle of the Boyne was fought in 1690 between two rival claimants of the English, Scottish, and Irish thrones – the Catholic King James and the Protestant King William – across the River Boyne near Drogheda on the east coast of Ireland. The battle, won by William, was a turning point in James' unsuccessful attempt to regain the crown and ultimately helped ensure the continuation of Protestant ascendancy in Ireland. The battle took place on 1 July 1690 in the "old style" calendar.

Monasterboice

The historic ruins of Monasterboice are of an early Christian settlement in County Louth in Ireland, north of Drogheda. It was founded in the late 5th century by Saint Buithe who died around 521, and was an important centre of religion and learning until the founding of nearby Mellifont Abbey in 1142. The site houses two churches built in the 14th century or later and an earlier round tower, but it is most famous for its 10th century high crosses.

The Boyne River Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge in County Meath, Ireland. It spans the Boyne River 3 kilometres west of Drogheda on the county boundary between County Meath and County Louth and is part of the M1 Northern Motorway. (It was the longest cable-stayed bridge in Ireland until 19 October 2009, when the River Suir Bridge opened on the N25.

Dowth is a Neolithic passage tomb which stands in the Boyne Valley, County Meath, Ireland. Dating from about 2,500 – 2000 BCE, is the second oldest behind Newgrange of the three principal tombs of the Brú na Bóinne ("Mansion on the Boyne") World Heritage Site – a complex of passage-tombs.

Townleyhall passage grave

Townleyhall passage grave is an Irish chamber tomb around 2km north of Dowth tomb and part of the megalithic complex of Brú na Bóinne in County Louth. The site was originally a Neolithic settlement but was abandoned by its occupants, perhaps because it was a temporary site serving the construction project or due to the death of a senior member, and turned into a passage grave.

Muiredach's High Cross

Muiredach's High Cross is a high cross from the 10th or possibly 9th century, located at the ruined monastic site of Monasterboice, County Louth, Ireland. There are two other high crosses at Monasterboice; in local terms Muiredach's cross is also known as the South Cross. Muiredach's cross has been described as the most beautiful specimen of Celtic stonework now in existence; and the crosses at Monasterboice have been stated to be Ireland's greatest contribution to European sculpture.

Tullyallen (Irish: Tulaigh Álainn, meaning "beautiful hill") is a village and townland 6 km north-west of the town of Drogheda in County Louth, Ireland. It is located in the historical Boyne Valley, in the Catholic parish of Mellifont (named after the nearby Mellifont Abbey); it is also close to Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth burial mounds, Monasterboice monastery, and to the Battle of the Boyne site.
