Rila Monastery
The Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila, better known as the Rila Monastery (Bulgarian: Рилски манастир, Rilski manastir) is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. It is situated in the southwestern Rila Mountains, 117 km south of the capital Sofia in the deep valley of the Rilska River at an elevation of 1,147 m above sea level. The monastery is named after its founder, the hermit Ivan of Rila (876 - 946 AD).
Iskar (river)
The Iskar is, with a length of 368 km, the longest river that runs solely in Bulgaria, and a tributary of the Danube. The Iskar is formed by three rivers, the Cherni (black) Iskar, Beli (white) Iskar and Levi (left) Iskar (known under the collective name Iskrove), with the source being accepted to be the Prav (straight) Iskar, a tributary of the Cherni Iskar. After descending from the north slopes of Rila, it fills the Iskar Reservoir—the largest in Bulgaria and the Lake Pancharevo.
Seven Rila Lakes
The Seven Rila Lakes are a group of lakes of glacial origin, situated in the northwestern Rila Mountains in Bulgaria. They are the most visited group of lakes in Bulgaria. The lakes are situated between 2,100 and 2,500 metres elevation above sea level. Each lake carries a name associated with its most characteristic feature. The highest one is called Salzata ("The Tear") due to its clear waters that allow visibility in depth.
Malyovitsa
Malyovitsa is a peak and ski resort in the northwestern part of the Rila Mountains in southwestern Bulgaria. It is 2,729 m high and is one of the most popular tourist regions in the mountain. The Rila Monastery is situated at its southern foot, and Malyovitsa Ski Centre — with two downhill tracks and two ski drags — is to the north. The main starting point for treks in the region is Malyovitsa Hut (at about 2 hours walk from the top of the summit).
Skakavitsa Waterfall
The Skakavitsa Waterfall (Bulgarian: Скакавица or Скакавишки водопад, Skakavishki vodopad) is the highest waterfall in the Rila Mountains in Bulgaria. It is part of Rila National Park and is located on the Skakavitsa River. The waterfall is situated on approximately 2,000 m above sea level, the water falling down from 70 m. The Skakavitsa Waterfall is one of the chief tourist attractions in the area owing also to the century-old endemic white fir (Pinum peuce) forests surrounding it.
Bonchuk Stadium
Bonchuk Stadium is a multi-use stadium in Dupnitsa, Bulgaria. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home field of PFC Marek Dupnitsa. The stadium has seating capacity for 16,050 people.
Rila, Bulgaria
Rila is a town in southwestern Bulgaria, in Rila Municipality, part of Kyustendil Province. It is the administrative centre of Rila municipality, which lies in the southeastern part of Kyustendil Province. The town lies in a mountainous region at the foot of the southwestern Rila Mountains, 20 km from the Rila Monastery, 34 km from Dupnitsa and 65 km from Kyustendil. In antiquity, the area was inhabited by the Greeks and Romans; it was known as Sportela and then as Roligera.
Panichishte
Panichishte is a ski resort and sports centre in the Rila Mountains of Bulgaria. It is located at 1350 metres above sea level, near the town of Dupnitsa on the edge of Rila National Park
Rila Municipality
Rila Municipality covers an area of 361 square kilometres (of which 54.84% forests and only 19.3% arable), has 3606 inhabitants and includes the following 5 places: Several peaks higher than 2,000 metres are part of the municipality, including Rilets (2,731 m), Yosifitsa (2,697 m), Kanarata (2,619 m), Zliya Zab (2,678 m), Kalin (2,667 m), Elenin Vrah (2,654 m) and Tsarev Vrah (2,378 m). The municipality also boasts 28 mountain lakes.
Church of St Nicholas, Sapareva Banya
The Church of St Nicholas (Bulgarian: църква „Свети Никола“, tsarkva „Sveti Nikola“) is a small medieval Eastern Orthodox church in the southwestern Bulgarian town of Sapareva Banya, which is part of Kyustendil Province. Originally either the property of a local notable or attached to a larger church, it was constructed anytime from the 11th to the 14th century. The church was built using red bricks and white mortar.
