The Tadjourah Region is a region in north-central Djibouti. With its capital at Tadjourah, it has an area of 7,100 square kilometres (2,700 sq mi).
Tadjoura is the oldest town in Djibouti and the capital of the Tadjourah Region. Lying on the Gulf of Tadjoura, it is home to a population of around 25,000 inhabitants. Tadjoura has an airstrip and is linked by ferry with Djibouti City. It is also known for its whitewashed buildings and nearby beaches.
The Goda Mountains lie northwest of the Gulf of Tadjoura, Tadjoura Region in Djibouti. They rise to 1,750 metres above sea level and are the nation's largest heavily vegetated area. A part of the mountains is protected within the Day Forest National Park, Djibouti's only national park. The ecology of this landform is considered an isolated outlier of the Ethiopian montane forest ecological zone, an important island of forest in a sea of semi-desert.
Sagallo or Sagallou was a short-lived Russian colony on the Gulf of Tadjoura in present-day Djibouti. In 1889, a Russian by the name of Nikolay Ivanovitch Achinov (b. 1856), arrived with settlers and an Orthodox priest. The French considered the presence of the Russians as a violation of their territorial rights and dispatched two gunboats. The Russians were bombarded and after some loss of life, surrendered.
