Summary

A spectacular area stretching over more than 26,000 ha in China's Hunan Province, the site is dominated by more than 3,000 narrow sandstone pillars and peaks, many over 200 m high. Between the peaks lie ravines and gorges with streams, pools and waterfalls, some 40 caves, and two large natural bridges. In addition to the striking beauty of the landscape, the region is also noted for the fact that it is home to a number of endangered plant and animal species.

Current State

Today, the Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area continues to enchant visitors with its awe-inspiring landscapes and cultural treasures. The area is divided into several zones, each offering its own distinct attractions.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, the most famous zone within Wulingyuan, is home to the iconic sandstone pillars that have become synonymous with the area. These towering formations, some reaching heights of over 200 meters, create a surreal and otherworldly atmosphere. Visitors can explore the park through a network of well-maintained trails and enjoy panoramic views from observation decks.

Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve, another highlight of Wulingyuan, offers breathtaking vistas of the surrounding peaks and valleys. The reserve is named after Tianzi, a local chieftain who led a successful rebellion against the Qing Dynasty. Visitors can take a cable car to the mountaintop and marvel at the sea of clouds that often blankets the area.

The Suoxiyu Nature Reserve, located in the eastern part of Wulingyuan, is known for its deep canyons, crystal-clear streams, and lush vegetation. It is a paradise for hikers and nature enthusiasts, with numerous trails leading to hidden waterfalls and secluded viewpoints.
