University of Iowa

The University of Iowa (also known as UI, or simply Iowa) is a public research university located in Iowa City, Iowa. It is the oldest public university in the state. The university is organized into eleven colleges granting undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees; and it is the home of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, one of the largest university-owned teaching hospitals in the nation.

Ped Mall (Iowa City)

The Ped Mall, also known as the Pedestrian Mall, is a pedestrian mall located in downtown Iowa City, Iowa, near the University of Iowa campus. Spanning from Burlington Street to Washington Street and Clinton Street to Linn Street, the Ped Mall serves as a gathering place for students, locals, transients, and the homeless. Fort Shelby (Wisconsin)

Fort Shelby was a United States military installation in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, built in 1814. It was named for Isaac Shelby, Revolutionary War soldier and first governor of Kentucky. The fort was captured by the British during the Siege of Prairie du Chien in July 1814. The British renamed the fort Fort McKay after Major William McKay, the commander of the forces that won the battle.

New Pioneer Food Co-op

New Pioneer Food Co-op, commonly shortened to NewPi, is a locally owned food cooperative based in Iowa City, Iowa. This city also serves as the headquarters of the National Cooperative Grocers Association. In addition to the Iowa City store, New Pioneer has a location in Coralville, Iowa. New Pioneer was founded in 1971 as “a natural foods buying club” modeled after the Rochdale Principles, and is now a full-service bakery and grocer with two locations in the Iowa City area.

Benton Street Bridge

Benton Street Bridge was a historically important bridge designed by Edward L. Ashton. It crossed the Iowa River in Iowa City. In 1989 it was demolished and replaced with a modern highway bridge. A historical marker nearby describes the old bridge. Ned Ashton has been called "the most distinguished bridge engineer in the history of Iowa and was a professor of civil engineering at the University of Iowa from 1943 to 1957.
