Phenix City is a city in Lee and Russell counties in the U.S. state of Alabama, and the county seat of Russell County. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city was 32,822. Mead Observatory
Mead Observatory is operated by Columbus State University's Coca-Cola Space Science Center at 701 Front Avenue, Columbus, Georgia. Established in 1996, the observatory has active night sky and solar study programs for students and the general public. The equipment can be controlled and monitored remotely by faculty and astronomers. The observatory also offers mobile astronomy programs such as "Astronomy Nights" at Callaway Gardens, F. D. Girard, Alabama
Girard, Alabama was a town in the far north-east corner of Russell County, Alabama across the Chattahoochee River from Columbus, Georgia. From 1832–1839 Girard was the seat of Russell County. In 1923 Girard was annexed by Phenix City, Alabama. At some point around this time the boundary of Russell County was moved north to take in Phenix City.

Eagle & Phenix Dam
The Eagle and Phenix Dam is a dam on the Chattahoochee River, in downtown Columbus, Georgia. The dam was built in 1868 to power the defunct Eagle and Phenix textile Mill. The dam is located just south of the 13th Street Bridge which connects Columbus to Phenix City, Alabama. The dam produces a 45-acre run of the river reservoir that extends approximately 1-mile upstream. The Eagle and Phenix Dam is now owned by the City of Columbus.
Battle of Columbus (1865)
The Battle of Columbus, Georgia (April 16, 1865), also known as the Battle of Girard, Alabama is widely regarded to be the last battle of the American Civil War. The Georgia state government has officially declared this battle the "last battle of the war between the states. " The Battle of Palmito Ranch in Texas occurred after the Battle of Columbus, but the engagement at Palmito Ranch occurred after Johnston's surrender to Sherman (April 26, 1865) and after the Confederacy dissolved on May 5.
