Hanko Peninsula

The Hanko Peninsula, also spelled Hango, is the southernmost point of mainland Finland. The soil is a sandy moraine, the last tip of the Salpausselkä ridge, and vegetation consists mainly of pine and low shrubs. The peninsula is known for its beautiful archipelago and long sandy beaches. The town of Hanko is situated on the peninsula. The Baltic Sea proper is demarcated by a line from the Hanko Peninsula to the Northwesternmost point of mainland Estonia.

Battle of Gangut

The Battle of Gangut took place on 27 July/ 7 August 1714 during the Great Northern War (1700–21), in the waters of Riilahti Bay, north of the Hanko Peninsula, near the site of the modern-day city of Hanko, Finland, between the Swedish Navy and Imperial Russian Navy. It was the first important victory of the Russian fleet in its history.

Hanko railway station

Hanko railway station (abbrev. Hnk, Finnish: Hangon rautatieasema, Swedish: Hangö järnvägsstation) is a railway station in the port city of Hanko, Finland along the Hanko–Hyvinkää railway. The station is located approximately 50 kilometres away from Karis railway station and is the terminus for the line. The current station building represents the postfunctionalism of the 1950s. The building was completed in 1949 and it was designed by architect Jarl Ungern.

Battle of Hanko (1941)

The Battle of Hanko (also known as the Hanko Front or the Siege of Hanko) was a lengthy series of small battles fought on Hanko Peninsula during the Continuation War between Finland and the Soviet Union in the second half of 1941. As both sides were eager to avoid a major, costly ground battle, fighting took the form of trench warfare, with artillery exchanges, sniping, patrol clashes, and small amphibious operations performed in the surrounding archipelago.

Steel (pusher)

Steel is a Finnish pusher vessel owned and operated by ESL Shipping. It is part of the Finnpusku integrated tug and barge system developed in the 1980s by Finnlines, a Finnish shipping company that also managed the vessel until 2003, in co-operation with Rautaruukki for the transportation needs of the steel company. The vessel, built by Hollming in Rauma, Finland, as Finn, was delivered on 28 April 1987 and has since been used mainly to supply raw materials to the Raahe Steel Works.

Finnish minelayer Louhi

Louhi was a Finnish Navy minelayer. The ship was originally constructed for the Imperial Russian Navy but was taken over by the Finns during the Russian Civil War. She had originally been named Voin, but was renamed as M1 in Finnish service. In 1936 she as given the more personal name Louhi, following the procedure of all other major ships in the Finnish navy.
