Castlegar, British Columbia
Castlegar is the second largest city in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada. It is located within the Selkirk Mountains at the confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers. It is a regional trade and transportation centre, with a local economy fueled by forestry, mining and tourism. It is home to Selkirk College, a regional airport, a pulp mill, and several sawmills.
Kinnaird, British Columbia
Kinnaird (Scottish Gaelic: An Ceann Àrd, "high headland") is a neighbourhood in Castlegar, British Columbia. It consists of the southern half of the city. It was incorporated as a village on August 6, 1948. It later amalgamated with the Town of Castlegar January 1, 1974 to form the City of Castlegar. It is the location of Kinnaird Elementary School, the community complex, and Kinnaird Park.
Brilliant Dam
Brilliant Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Kootenay River near Castlegar, British Columbia, Canada. It was built during the Second World War, mostly by Doukhobour men exempt from military service, and its twin turbines first came into operation in June, 1944. Brilliant Dam is 42.6 metres high, with a head of 28 metres, and eight sluice gates. In 2000 work began to upgrade the facility. Upon completion it's four turbines generate 145 MW of electricity.
Ootischenia, British Columbia
Ootischenia is a designated place near Castlegar, British Columbia. In 2006, it had a population of 856. Founded as one of several Doukhobour colonies in the area, it is also the location of Castlegar's two golf courses. The song "Ootischenia" by the Be Good Tanyas on their album Hello Love is about singer Frazey Ford's childhood home in Ootischenia.
