Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island is 18 kilometres (11 mi) off the Western Australian coast, near Fremantle. It is called Wadjemup by the Noongar people, meaning "place across the water". The island is 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) long, and 4.5 kilometres (2.8 mi) at its widest point. Its total land area is 19 square kilometres (7.3 sq mi). Rottnest Island has been a popular local holiday destination for over 50 years. The Western Australian vernacular diminutive is "Rotto", or "Rottnest".

Gage Roads

Gage Roads, is the sea channel in the Indian Ocean offshore from Fremantle, Western Australia. It was the location of the 1987 America's Cup, and serves as a shipping lane and anchorage for most sea traffic heading towards the seaport of Fremantle. Rottnest Island lies to the west and Cockburn Sound to the south.

City of York (barque)

The City of York was a 1,194 ton iron barque which sunk after hitting a reef off Rottnest Island in the last few kilometres of its voyage from San Francisco to Fremantle, Western Australia in 1899. The three masted, 68 metre (223 feet) long, iron hulled ship was built in 1869 by Glasgow shipbuilders J. Elder and Company. The British owners were the 'Ship City of York Company'.

1987 America's Cup

The 1987 America's Cup was the twenty-seventh challenge for the America's Cup and the first time for 132 years that it had not been defended by the New York Yacht Club. The American challenger Stars & Stripes 87, sailed by Dennis Conner, beat the Australian defender Kookaburra III, sailed by Iain Murray, four wins to nil in the best of seven series. Conner thus became the first person both to unsuccessfully defend the America's Cup and then to win it back again.

Centaur (1849 ship)

Centaur was a 188 ton iron brig built in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1849. She was sunk after striking a reef at the southern section of Marmion Reef on 9 December 1874 while travelling from Champion Bay to Fremantle. All nine crew and four passengers, including noted politician and lawyer Septimus Burt, survived. The 30 metre long brig was carrying a cargo of 200 long tons of galena when it struck the reef, about 3.7 kilometres offshore.
