Hanna, Wyoming

Hanna is a town in Carbon County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 841 at the 2010 census. The town was started as a coal supply location for the Union Pacific Railroad. The population peaked at 2,288 in 1980 and has declined as local coal mines have ceased operation.

Hanna Mine Disaster

In 1889, Union Pacific Railroad needed a reliable fuel source to run its massive coal-fired engines. After the coal mines in Carbon, Wyoming ran out, it hastily formed the Union Pacific Coal Company and opened a mine at "Chimney Springs," according to research by Nancy Anderson, director of Hanna Basin Museum.
