Pittsburg is a city in Crawford County, in southeastern Kansas, United States. It is the most populous city in Crawford County and in southeastern Kansas. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 20,233.
Pittsburg State University
Pittsburg State University, also called Pitt State or PSU, is a public university with approximately 7,100 students (5,900 undergraduates and 1,200 graduate students) located in Pittsburg, Kansas, United States. A large percentage of the student population consists of residents within the Pittsburg region; the gender proportion is relatively equal. Almost 89% of the students are Americans. Pitt State also has an 19:1 student-to-faculty ratio. It is a member of the Kansas Board of Regents.
John Lance Arena
John Lance Arena is a 6,500 seat multi-purpose arena in Pittsburg, Kansas. It was built in 1971. It is the home of the Pittsburg State University Gorillas basketball teams. The arena was named after John F. Lance, (1897 to 1981), educator and head basketball coach at PSU from 1923 until 1963. Lance led the team to win 47 consecutive games between 1929 and 1932, the longest winning streak in college basketball history until 1956.
Carnie Smith Stadium
Carnie Smith Stadium (formerly Brandenburg Stadium) is the football stadium for Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. The stadium is nicknamed "The Jungle" (after the school's mascot, the gorilla), or "The Pitt. " Built in 1923, the stadium was originally named for the college's first president, William Aaron Brandenburg. In 1987, it was renamed for Carnie Smith who led the school to NAIA National Football Championships in 1957 and 1961.
