Kodiak Municipal Airport
Kodiak Municipal Airport is a city-owned public-use airport located two nautical miles (4 km) northeast of the central business district of Kodiak, a city on Kodiak Island in the U.S. state of Alaska. The FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2007-2011 categorized this as commercial service airport. However, that classification last applied in calendar year 2004 when the airport had 6,963 passenger boardings (enplanements).
Naval Special Warfare Cold Weather Detachment Kodiak
The Naval Special Warfare Cold Weather Detachment Kodiak is a United States Navy base near Kodiak, Alaska used to train United States Navy SEALs. The training includes cold weather survival and advanced tactical training in forested, coastal environments. The base covers 55 acres on Spruce Cape and training is conducted throughout the surrounding area and nearby Long Island. As of November 2008, six SEAL classes averaging 40 students come to Kodiak each year for a 28-day course.
Woody Island (Alaska)
Woody Island is located in Chiniak Bay, 2.6 miles east of Kodiak, Alaska. It was originally settled by the native Alutiiq people who called themselves Tangirnarmiut, "the people of Tangirnaq. " They inhabited and used Woody Island for thousands of years. The Russians established an agricultural colony on Woody Island in 1792. It was officially designated Wood Island in 1894 by the US Post Office and was the primary coastal settlement for commerce and trade for many years.
