Introduction

Lumbini, located in the Lumbini Zone of the Rupandehi District in the Western Terai region of Nepal, is a UNESCO World Heritage site known as the birthplace of the Lord Buddha. History

Lumbini's history dates back over 2,500 years when it was the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became the Lord Buddha. According to Buddhist tradition, Queen Mayadevi, the mother of Siddhartha, gave birth to him while holding onto a tree branch in the Lumbini Garden. The site remained a place of pilgrimage for centuries until it was lost and forgotten. In 1896, the rediscovery of Lumbini by a German archaeologist, Dr. Alois Fuhrer, brought it back into the limelight. Excavations revealed a stone pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BCE, which confirmed Lumbini as the birthplace of the Lord Buddha. Current State

Lumbini is a sprawling complex covering an area of approximately 4.8 square miles. The site is divided into three main areas: the Sacred Garden, the Monastic Zone, and the Lumbini Village. The Sacred Garden is the heart of Lumbini and contains the Mayadevi Temple, which enshrines the exact spot where Queen Mayadevi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama. The temple is a simple but elegant structure with a stone slab marking the exact birthplace. Devotees offer prayers and light butter lamps in reverence to the Lord Buddha. The Monastic Zone is a peaceful area where different Buddhist communities from around the world have constructed monasteries and meditation centers. These monasteries showcase various architectural styles and cultural traditions, providing visitors with a glimpse into the diversity of Buddhism. Lumbini Village is the residential area surrounding the Sacred Garden. It offers accommodation, restaurants, and shops catering to the needs of pilgrims and tourists. The village also hosts the Lumbini Museum, which exhibits artifacts and relics related to Buddhism and the history of Lumbini. To preserve and promote Lumbini, the Lumbini Development Trust was established in 1985. The trust, in collaboration with the international community, has undertaken various initiatives to conserve the site and improve facilities for visitors. Efforts have been made to restore ancient monuments, develop infrastructure, and enhance the overall experience for pilgrims and tourists. Lumbini's significance as a UNESCO World Heritage site has led to increased recognition and support from the international community.
