Shirahama Station
Shirahama Station is a railway station on the West Japan Railway Company (JR West) Kisei Main Line (Kinokuni Line) in Shirahama, Nishimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. Limited express trains named "Kuroshio" stop at this station and part of those return to Shin-Osaka and Kyoto.
Engetsu Island
Engetsu Island is a small island off the coast of Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. It includes a natural arch through which seawater passes. Its official name is Takashima, and it is approximately 35 metres east-to-west, 130 metres north-to-south, and 25 metres high at the tallest. The island is largely formed of sandstone and has become less stable over time.
Seto Marine Biological Laboratory
The Seto Marine Biological Laboratory (瀬戸臨海実験所, also known as SMBL), is a marine biology field station of Kyoto University. It is located in the small town of Shirahama in Wakayama Prefecture about 230 km from Kyoto. Established in 1922, research at the lab has historically been focused on marine invertebrates. A small island, Hatakejima, belongs to the laboratory and serves as an experimental field site in southeastern Tanabe Bay.
