Kalvaryja

Kalvaryja is a Catholic Calvary cemetery in Minsk, Belarus. The cemetery contains a small Catholic chapel, currently used for general worship. The original wooden Catholic church was first built here back in 1673, but currently the oldest remaining graves are from 1808. The small chapel was built in 1839. Several famous Polish and Belarusian personalities from the 19th century are buried at Kalvaryja.

Minsk-1 Airport

Minsk-1 Airport is an airport located within the city limits of Minsk, Belarus, just a few kilometres south from the centre. It takes about 10 minutes by car or bus to reach the airport from the city centre. It has one 2000 m x 60 m runway, enabling aircraft of maximum weight of 63 tons to operate. Minsk-1 was built in 1933. The first aircraft to use the airport was a K-5. In 1934, Po-2 aircraft were served in the airport.

The Drazdy conflict (sometimes spelled Drozdy) was an incident in July 1998 involving the Government of Belarus and diplomats from other nations. It began by the leader of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko declaring the Drazdy Complex as property of the government and shutting it down for repairs. The problem was that many diplomats, especially from Western nation-states, called the complex home.

Nyamiha disaster

The Nyamiha disaster was a deadly human crush that took place at Nyamiha metro station in Minsk, Belarus. On May 30, 1999, a sudden thunderstorm caused a number of young people to race for shelter during an open-air concert nearby. The stampede was funneled toward the underpass of the metro station and many people were killed in the crush when they started slipping on the wet pavement, falling, and trampling each other. The official death toll was 53.

Church of Saints Simon and Helena

Church of Saints Simon and Helen (Belarusian: Касцёл святых Сымона і Алены) also known as the Red Church is a Roman Catholic church on Independence Square in Minsk, Belarus. This neo-Romanesque church was designed by polish architects Tomasz Pajzderski and Władysław Marconi, and built during 1905-1910. The bricks for its walls were sourced from Częstochowa, whilst the roof tiles came from Włocławek. Its construction was financed by Edward Woyniłłowicz, a prominent Polish civic activist.

2008 Minsk bombing

The 2008 Minsk bombing took place just after midnight on 4 July 2008, in Minsk, Belarus and wounded 54 people. The explosion happened near the Hero City Memorial at a concert to celebrate Belarus' independence. The concert had been attended by Belarus' President, Alexander Lukashenko, who was not hurt and who officials said was not the target. A second, larger bomb was discovered before the blast. No clear motive for the blast has been revealed.

This article is about the ghetto in Minsk. For a ghetto in Mińsk Mazowiecki during the German Nazi occupation of Poland, see Mińsk Ghetto. The Minsk Ghetto was created soon after the German invasion of the Soviet Union. It was one of the largest in Eastern Europe, and the largest in the German-occupied territory of the Soviet Union.
