Possession Island (Queensland)
Possession Island is a small island in the Torres Strait Islands group off the coast of far northern Queensland, Australia. The island is known as Bedanug or Bedhan Lag by its Sovereign Original inhabitants, the Kaurareg people. During his first voyage of discovery James Cook sailed northwards along the east coast of Australia, landing at Botany Bay.
Horn Island, Queensland
Horn Island (Narupai) is an island in the Torres Strait, in Queensland's north between the Australian mainland and Papua New Guinea. At the 2006 census, Horn Island had a population of 585. Church influence: London Missionary Society up until 1915 when the Anglican Church assumed responsibility. Horn Island is known as Nœrupai (colloquially Nurupai) to the Kaurareg ("islander") people and was given its English name by Matthew Flinders in 1802.
Prince of Wales Island (Queensland)
Prince of Wales Island (Muralug Island) is an island 20 km north of Muttee Heads which is adjacent to Bamaga at the tip of Cape York Peninsula within the Endeavour Strait Queensland, Australia in the Torres Strait and south of Thursday Island. With an area of 204.6 km, Prince of Wales Island is the largest of the Torres Strait Islands. Being inhabited only by a few Kaurareg families (population 20 in 2001), it is very sparsely populated.
Shire of Torres
The Shire of Torres is a local government area located in Far North Queensland, Australia, covering large sections of the Torres Strait Islands and the northern tip of Cape York Peninsula north of 11°S latitude. It holds two distinctions—it is the northernmost Local Government Area in Australia, and is the only one to abut an international border — it is at one point just 73 kilometres from Papua New Guinea. It is administered from Thursday Island.
Yeta (Port Lihou Island)
Yeta (Yœtha beard), or Port Lihou Island is an island in the Torres Strait, in Queensland's north between the Australian mainland and Papua New Guinea. It is at {{#invoke:Coordinates|coord}}{{#coordinates:10|44|S|142|14|E|region:AU-QLD_type:isle|| | |name= }}. Yeta is a small island that lies off the south coast of Muralag, separated by a channel that is three kilometres long but only a few metres wide at the north-eastern end (170 m at the south-western end).
Endeavour Strait
The Endeavour Strait is a strait running between the Australian mainland and Prince of Wales Island, in the extreme south of the Torres Strait. It was named in 1770 by explorer James Cook, after his own vessel, The Endeavour, and he used the strait as passage out to the Indian Ocean on his voyage. The Endeavour Strait is approximately thirty statute miles (50 km) in length from its northernmost tip to its southern extremities, and varies from two to six miles (3 to 10 km) in breadth.
