Description and Basic Information

Jersey with its capital Saint Helier is located in Europe (Western Europe, island in the English Channel). It covers some 117 square kilometres (about two-thirds the size of Washington, DC) with 90,812 citizens. English and Portuguese are the the official languages used in Jersey.

Jersey is a self-governing British crown dependency and is not administered by the United Kingdom. High earnings, zero inheritance tax rates and a mild climate make the island a popular offshore finance centre. Tourism, banking and finance, and agriculture, particular dairying, are mainstays of the economy. Produce includes potatoes (Jersey Royals), cauliflower, tomatoes, flowers, beef and dairy products as well as light industrial and electrical goods, and textiles.
