Summary

The site features the remains of a city founded by Dorian Greeks in the 5th century BC on the northern shores of the Black Sea. It encompasses six component sites with urban remains and agricultural lands divided into several hundreds of chora, rectangular plots of equal size. The plots supported vineyards whose production was exported by the city which thrived until the 15th century. The site features several public building complexes and residential neighbourhoods, as well as early Christian monuments alongside remains from Stone and Bronze Age settlements; Roman and medieval tower fortifications and water supply systems; and exceptionally well-preserved examples of vineyard planting and dividing walls. In the 3rd century AD, the site was known as the most productive wine centre of the Black Sea and remained a hub of exchange between the Greek, Roman and Byzantine Empires and populations north of the Black Sea. It is an outstanding example of democratic land organization linked to an ancient polis, reflecting the city’s social organization.

Introduction

The Ancient City of Tauric Chersonese and its Chora, located in Ukraine at coordinates N44 36 39 E33 29 29, is a UNESCO World Heritage site of immense historical and cultural significance. This site encompasses the remains of an ancient Greek colony, which later became a Roman city, and its surrounding agricultural territory, known as the chora. The site offers a glimpse into the rich history of the region, showcasing the architectural, cultural, and economic developments that took place over several centuries.

History

The Ancient City of Tauric Chersonese was founded in the 5th century BC by Greek colonists from Heraclea Pontica. It quickly flourished as a major trading hub, benefiting from its strategic location on the Crimean Peninsula. The city's prosperity continued under Roman rule, and it became an important military and administrative center. During the Byzantine era, Chersonese played a crucial role in the region's defense against invasions. However, in the 10th century, it fell under the control of the Kievan Rus, marking a significant shift in its political landscape. The city experienced a decline in the following centuries due to Mongol invasions and the shifting tides of power in the region. In the 14th century, Chersonese was conquered by the Genoese, who established a thriving trade network. However, their rule was short-lived, as the Ottoman Empire took control of the city in the 15th century. The Ottoman era saw the construction of several mosques and other Islamic structures, adding a unique architectural dimension to the site.

Current State

Today, the Ancient City of Tauric Chersonese and its Chora stand as a testament to the diverse cultural influences that have shaped the region over the centuries. The site covers an area of approximately 2,000 hectares and includes well-preserved ruins of ancient buildings, fortifications, and religious structures. The city's defensive walls, constructed during different periods, showcase the evolution of military architecture. The remains of the ancient theater, which once hosted performances and gatherings, provide insight into the cultural life of the city. The Basilica, an early Christian church, and the numerous Byzantine churches scattered throughout the site highlight the religious significance of Chersonese. The chora, the agricultural territory surrounding the city, is characterized by its well-preserved field systems, irrigation channels, and farmsteads. These elements offer valuable insights into the agricultural practices of the ancient inhabitants and their ability to sustain a thriving urban center. Efforts have been made to preserve and protect the Ancient City of Tauric Chersonese and its Chora. The site has been extensively excavated, and ongoing archaeological research continues to uncover new discoveries. Conservation measures have been implemented to safeguard the fragile structures and prevent further deterioration. In recognition of its outstanding universal value, the Ancient City of Tauric Chersonese and its Chora were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2013. The site serves as a living testament to the region's rich history, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the ancient past and appreciate the cultural heritage of Ukraine.
