Shikotan
Shikotan is one of the bigger islands of the Kuril Islands, which are part of the Russian Federation. It is one of the four southernmost islands which Japan maintains a claim for. It is one of the islands the Soviet Union agreed to transfer to Japan in the event of a peace treaty between the two countries. The name of "Shikotan" derives from the Ainu language and means "land with big communities. " The total land area of Shikotan is 225 km².
