Selkirk, Manitoba
Selkirk is a city in the western Canadian province of Manitoba, located about 22 km northeast of the provincial capital Winnipeg on the Red River, near . It is the largest city in the Interlake Region with a population of 9,934. The mainstays of the local economy are tourism, a local steel mill, and a major mental health facility. A vertical lift bridge over the Red River connects Selkirk with the smaller town of East Selkirk.
Selkirk Recreation Complex
The Selkirk Recreation Complex is an ice hockey arena and community centre located in Selkirk, Manitoba. The city-owned facility, which opened in 1992, features an 2,751 seat arena and 500-person banquet hall. Its primary tenants are the Selkirk Steelers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, the Selkirk Fishermen of the Keystone Junior Hockey League, and Selkirk's minor hockey program.
Marine Museum of Manitoba
The Marine Museum of Manitoba, at Selkirk, Manitoba, was established in 1972 to gather ships, artifacts, and items relating to shipping, to tell the story of the development and the operation of transportation on Lake Winnipeg and the Red River. The period covered by the Museum's displays starts circa 1850 and continues to present day. The Marine Museum is a non-profit organization operated by a board of local citizens operating under the name of The Marine Museum of Manitoba (Selkirk) Inc.
Saint John's Cathedral Boys' School
Saint John's Cathedral Boys' School (SJCBS) was a school that was located in Selkirk, Manitoba. It was founded in the early 1960s by Ted Byfield and Frank Wiens. The two started an Anglican lay order called the Company of the Cross, claimed to be based on a reading of some of C.S. Lewis's writings. The Company of the Cross was under the authority of the resident bishop in Winnipeg, officially called the Diocese of Rupert's Land. The teachers were paid $1.00 per day and provided room and board.
