Notable figures born there include Hjalmar Schacht, a Nazi ecomomist who introduced a wide variety of schemes in Germany in order to tackle the effects that the Great Depression had on that country, and was a key player in the initial economic steps towards re-armament. Until January 1, 2007 Tinglev was also a municipality in the former South Jutland County. The municipality covered an area of 326 km, and has a total population of 10,148 (2005). Its last mayor was Susanne Beier, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party. The municipality was created in 1970 due to a kommunalreform ("Municipality Reform") that combined a number of existing parishes: Bjolderup Parish Burkal Parish Bylderup Parish Ravsted Parish Tinglev Parish Uge Parish Tinglev municipality ceased to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It was merged with Bov, Lundtoft, Rødekro, and Aabenraa municipalities to form a new Aabenraa municipality. This created a municipality with an area of 951 km² and a total population of 60,151 (2005).

Frøslev Prison Camp

Located at 54.93, 9.25 (Lat. / Lng.), less than 7 mi away.
More reading: Wikipedia Article

Frøslev Camp was an internment camp in German-occupied Denmark during World War II. In order to avoid deportation of Danes to German concentration camps, Danish authorities suggested, in January 1944, that an internment camp be created in Denmark. The German occupation authorities consented, and the camp was erected near the village of Frøslev in the south-west of Denmark, close to the German border. From mid-August until the end of the German occupation in May 1945, 12,000 prisoners passed through the camp's gates. Most of them were suspected members of the Danish resistance movement, Communists and other political prisoners. Living conditions in the camp were generally tolerable, but 1,600 internees were deported to German concentration camps, where 220 of them died (approximate numbers). Towards the end of the war, the Swedish count Folke Bernadotte tried to get all Scandinavian concentration camp prisoners to Sweden. Simultaneously the Danish administration negotiated with the Germans about rescue of the Danish prisoners in Germany. As a result of these efforts many Scandinavian prisoners came with the white buses from the German camps. In March and April 1945 10,000 Danish and Norwegian captives were brought home from Germany. Some of the returning prisoners came to Frøslev Prison Camp. Among those were some of the 1,960 deported Danish policemen, which had been arrested and deported on 19 September 1944.

Southern Jutland

Located at 54.93, 9.25 (Lat. / Lng.), less than 7 mi away.

Southern Jutland is the name for the region south of the Kongeå in Jutland, Denmark. The region north of the Kongeå is called Nørrejylland (Northern Jutland). Both territories had their own ting assemblies in the Middle Ages. Southern Jutland is mentioned for the first time in the Knýtlinga saga. In the 13th century South Jutland became a duchy. The first duke was Canute Lavard (Knud Lavard). In the late 14th century it took the name of the Duchy of Schleswig. The duchy was named after the city of Schleswig (Slesvig). The dukes of Schleswig also became kings of Denmark. With the demise of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation in the 19th Century, the term "Sønderjylland" was revieved by Denmark and became the subject of a naming dispute between Danes and Germans (the latter continuing the centuries old "Schleswig") - part of the struggle over possession of the territory itself, which came to war in 1848 and again in 1864. Following the Schleswig Plebiscites in 1920, South Jutland was divided into Northern and Southern Schleswig. Northern Schleswig was also known as South Jutland County (1970–2006) and is now part of the Region of Southern Denmark. Southern Schleswig is a part of the German federal state Schleswig-Holstein. Both parts cooperate today as a Euroregion, which covers most of Southern Jutland.

Padborg Station

Padborg Station is a railway station in the Danish town of Padborg in the southern part of Jutland. It is the last Danish train station before the border with Germany which lies immediately south of the station, on the route to Flensburg. The extensive station building has no booking office (self-service ticket machines available) but has a waiting room and toilet facilities. Office space in the station building is used by a number of railfreight companies as Padborg retains extensive railway marshalling yards north of the passenger station. A two-hourly cross-boundary Copenhagen/Flensburg service is operated by DSB and calls here, supplemented by a limited service of EuroCity trains penetrating further into Germany and an overnight sleeper service to/from Munich. To the west, Tønder, Denmark on the route to Niebull is a further boundary station. Pre-Schengen, Padborg was also where there was a large-scale checking of travelers passports, visas and / or other identity documents but this has all disappeared in the approximately 10 years since Denmark has become an active part of the Schengen cooperation. Passenger traffic has especially gained momentum after Eurocity and CityNightLine lines was created and developed.

Padborg is a Danish border town with a population of 4,476 (1 January 2012) located on the border with Germany. It is the location where both the E45 motorway, a railway and the historic Danish Army Road, hærvejen, cross the border. Located a few kilometres northwest of Schleswig's historic commercial centre, Flensburg, Padborg was a small settlement when the region returned to Danish rule in 1920 following a plebiscite, but grew rapidly in size after the establishment of the current border. It is a transport centre and railway town. When the border was established in 1920, the originally planned border line was moved c. 200 metres south of Padborg in order to allow construction of the railway station and a customs office. Padborg is well known in Denmark for its motorsportring, Padborg Park, and the head offices of the large discount chain Fleggaard. Padborg has a broad based transport industry with most of the largest European transport companies having local offices. Padborg is located in Aabenraa municipality. Until December 31, 2006, it belonged to Bov municipality.
