Houghton, Michigan

Houghton is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and largest city in the Copper Country on the Keweenaw Peninsula. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 7,708. It is the county seat of Houghton County. It has been listed as one of the "100 Best Small Towns in America. " Houghton is sometimes confused with, or thought to be close to, Houghton Lake; the latter is actually located in the state's Lower Peninsula.

Dee Stadium

Mont Ripley

Mont Ripley is a ski hill located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is owned by Michigan Technological University. It was founded in the early 1900s (by Fred Lonsdorf) and has since grown to one of the premier ski hills in the American Midwest. With the addition of snow making in 2000, the season has been extended from late November to late March or early April. Mont Ripley is known for its challenging terrain and spectacular views of Houghton, Portage Lake and the Huron Mountains.

Quincy Smelter

The Quincy Smelter is the only remaining copper smelter in the Lake Superior region. It is located north of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge in Ripley, Michigan. It was operated by the Quincy Mine until 1972 and processed ore from 13 local mines. There is currently controversy over what should be done with the land which is currently owned by Franklin Township. The EPA and National Park Service want to turn the site into a historical self-tour or fishing and picnicking area.

Scott Hotel

The Scott Hotel is a former hotel located at 101 East Quincy Street in Hancock, Michigan, originally known as the Hotel Scott. As of 2009, it is also known as the Scott Building. The five-story building is in the Renaissance Revival style, constructed of tan brick and trimmed with Lake Superior Sandstone. The building was listed as a Michigan State Historic Site on January 17, 1986.

Kerredge Theatre

The Kerredge Theatre was a theatre located in the 1st block of East Quincy Street in Hancock, Michigan, next to the Scott Hotel. It was built by William and Ray Kerredge and completed by Fall 1902. The theatre hosted many vaudeville groups and could accommodate 1250 patrons. The theatre was fronted by a circular balcony. The Kerredge Theatre was built in response to the construction two years earlier of The Calumet Theatre in Calumet, Michigan.
