Kenfig
Kenfig is a village and former borough in Bridgend, Wales. The borough contributed with other Glamorgan towns to sending a member of parliament to Westminster until the Reform Act of 1832. The municipal ceremonial mace is in the National Museum of Wales but a pewter copy is on view in a public house. The area was originally settled in the Bronze Age, while the later mediaeval town is now covered by the Kenfig Burrows sand dunes.
SS Samtampa
SS Samtampa was a 7,219 ton steamship wrecked on Sker Point, off Porthcawl and Kenfig, Wales, in the Bristol Channel on 23 April 1947. At the time of the shipwreck, the Samtampa was operated by the Houlder Line. There were 47 fatalities in the incident, 39 from the ship and 8 volunteer crew of the Mumbles RNLI rescue team from the lifeboat Edward, Prince of Wales who died attempting to save the crew of the Samtampa. The lifeboat had returned to base, but had been sent out a second time.
Sker House
Sker House is a historical building in Wales. Originally built as a monastic grange of the Cistercian order over 900 years ago, it is situated just outside of the village of Kenfig, near Bridgend. The house later became a residential property and has been involved in many of the disputes that the area has experienced. Many of the area's prominent historical figures have been residents.
Sker Point
Sker Point is a headland of South Wales between Port Talbot and Porthcawl. On April 23, 1947 the Samtampa, a liberty ship, was wrecked at Sker Point. Her crew of 39 perished and all eight volunteer crewmen of the Mumbles RNLI lifeboat were lost while attempting to rescue her. Sker Point is also the title of a song by the Welsh heavy metal band Triaxis.
Cornelly
Cornelly is a community in Bridgend County Borough, South Wales. In 2001, the population of the Cornelly ward was 5,982. The community includes two villages, North Cornelly and South Cornelly, and it is bisected by the A48 and M4. Sand dunes in the area conceal the walled town of Kenfig, founded in the 1120s and overwhelmed in the late 14th century. Another notable local feature is Sker House, a historic building which overlooks the dunes.
Kenfig Castle
Kenfig Castle is a ruined castle in Bridgend County Borough in Wales that came to prominence after the Anglo-Norman invasion of Wales in the late eleventh century. An early reference to a castle at Kenfig can be found in 1080, when Iestyn ap Gwrgan was said to have refortified it, but probably this was a different structure to that raised alongside the town that developed there in the mid-twelfth century.
Kenfig Pool
Kenfig Pool is a National Nature Reserve situated near Porthcawl, Bridgend. Wild storms and huge tides between the 13th and 15th centuries are mainly responsible for creating the Kenfig dunes near Porthcawl, as they threw vast quantities of sand up over the Glamorgan coast. This buried the nearby borough of Kenfig, and its castle, of which only the tower is still visible.
