Tay Rail Bridge
The Tay Bridge (sometimes unofficially the Tay Rail Bridge) is a railway bridge approximately 2.75 miles (3.5 kilometres) long that spans the Firth of Tay in Scotland, between the city of Dundee and the suburb of Wormit in Fife. As with the Forth Bridge, the Tay Bridge has also been called the Tay Rail Bridge since the construction of a road bridge over the firth, the Tay Road Bridge. The rail bridge replaced an early train ferry.
Firth of Tay
The Firth of Tay is a firth in Scotland between the council areas of Fife, Perth and Kinross, the City of Dundee and Angus, into which Scotland's largest river in terms of flow, the River Tay empties. The firth has a maximum width of 3 mi at Invergowrie. Two bridges span the firth, the Tay Road Bridge and the Tay Rail Bridge. The firth has one major island, the marshy Mugdrum Island.
Wormit
Wormit is a small town on the banks of the Firth of Tay in north-east Fife, Scotland. It is most famous for its location at the southern end of the Tay Rail Bridge. Its railway station (closed in 1969) was on a closed branch line which left the main line (Edinburgh/Dundee) railway immediately at the south end of the Bridge to serve Wormit/Newport. The closed Wormit station was later dismantled and rebuilt at the heritage Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway to the west of Edinburgh.
Radio Tay
Radio Tay is a division of Bauer Radio which broadcasts two Independent Local Radio stations throughout Tayside and northeast Fife in Scotland. Tayside Sound Limited was incorporated on 27 April 1979 to set up a radio station in accordance with the regulatory body, Independent Broadcasting Authority. Radio Tay commenced broadcasting on Friday 17 October 1980 from the Angus transmitter near Dundee. A relay transmitter in Perth began carrying Radio Tay programming five weeks later.
Tay Bridge disaster
The Tay Bridge disaster occurred during a violent storm on 28 December 1879 when the first Tay Rail Bridge collapsed while a train was passing over it from Wormit to Dundee, killing all aboard. The bridge – designed by Sir Thomas Bouch – used lattice girders supported by iron piers, with cast iron columns and wrought iron cross-bracing. The piers were narrower and their cross-bracing was less extensive and robust than on previous similar designs by Bouch.
