Swanston, Edinburgh
Swanston is an area of Edinburgh, Scotland at the base of Caerketton Hill. In 2001 in had a population of only 75 residents. It is a small village lying to the south of the larger suburban area of Fairmilehead, on the south side of the Edinburgh City Bypass off Oxgangs Road, and five miles from the city centre. The name is also used to encompass some of the more modern housing on the approach road to the village, on the north side of the bypass.
Mortonhall
Mortonhall is an area of Edinburgh, Scotland, on the south edge of the city. It is perhaps best known for its crematorium, designed by Sir Basil Spence, which is considered to be an outstanding example of Scottish modern architecture. It is based on the same design as his work at Coventry Cathedral. The crematorium has a lush woodland setting, and acts as a local park. The land to the NW acts as a Garden of Remembrance.
Hillend, Edinburgh
Hillend is a small hamlet in Midlothian, just outside the Scottish capital Edinburgh, best known for the Hillend Ski Centre, an artificial ski slope. It is near the boundary between the area administered by Midlothian and the City of Edinburgh, and gains its name for being situated on the nub end of the Pentland Hills. There is also Swanston Golf Course, Lothianburn Golf Course, and a pub, The Fairmile Inn. The area is dominated by the Edinburgh city bypass.
Braid Hills
The Braid Hills form an area towards the south-western edge of Edinburgh, Scotland. The hills themselves are largely open space. Housing in the area is mostly confined to detached villas, and some large terraced houses. The Braid Hills Hotel sits above Pentland Terrace and Comiston Road, overlooking the park across the road. The area is well known for its golf course and its views of the city, and is a popular destination for families taking children sledging in the winter.
Comiston
Comiston is a suburb of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It is south of Morningside and west of the Braid Hills. The main road through the area, Comiston Road, is a continuation of Morningside Road, and further south becomes Biggar Road. It is classified as the A702 which indeed runs eventually to Biggar.
Fairmilehead
Fairmilehead is a district of South Edinburgh. It lies approximately 3 miles due south of the city centre and borders Midlothian. The area comprises the districts of Buckstone, Caiystane, Swanston, Frogston and Winton. The centre of the area is the crossroads between Buckstone Terrace/Biggar Road and Frogston Road/Oxgangs Road. There is a bank and a shop at the crossroads, as well as Fairmilehead Parish Church, which is a parish church of the Church of Scotland.
Blackford Hill
Blackford Hill (164 m) is a hill in Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland. It is in the area of Blackford, between Morningside, and the Braid Hills. The hill has clear views over Edinburgh to the north, and the Pentland Hills to the south. It is very popular with dog walkers, as it has many well established paths, as well as runners and other leisure users. The Royal Observatory, Edinburgh is located near the summit.
Blackford Pond, Edinburgh
Blackford Pond is a small, artificial pond created during the Victorian Era in a glacial hollow in the Blackford region of Edinburgh. It is next to Blackford Hill, and is easily accessed from both ends. The pond is popular with families, due to its accessibility and the presence of a play area. It has significant populations of birds, including swans and ducks. There is a small bird house on the artificial island in the middle of the pond, which attracts birds all year round.
