Cammell Laird

Cammell Laird, one of the famous names in British shipbuilding during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, came about following the merger of Laird, Son & Co. of Birkenhead and Johnson Cammell & Co. of Sheffield at the turn of the twentieth century. They also built railway rolling stock until 1929, when that side of the business was separated and became part of the Metropolitan-Cammell Carriage and Wagon Company.

Egerton Dock

Egerton Dock, is a dock at Birkenhead, Wirral Peninsula, England. Named after Sir Philip de Malpas Grey Egerton who laid the foundation stone in October 1844, the dock was completed in 1847. This was just prior to a suspension of the dock scheme, due to a financial crisis affecting the Birkenhead Dock Company. The dock was originally accessible to shipping from the Great Float and via the Morpeth Dock entrance from the River Mersey.

Morpeth Dock

Morpeth Dock is a dock at Birkenhead, Wirral Peninsula, England. Built between 1844 and 1847, it also included a smaller branch dock to the east. It is named after Lord Morpeth, the 7th Earl of Carlisle, who was the First Commissioner of Woods and Forests. Originally, the dock connected directly to the River Mersey via locks, although the entrance channel has since been partially infilled and the locks removed after being disused for some years.

Alfred Dock

Alfred Dock is a dock at Birkenhead, Wirral Peninsula, England. The dock covers an area of 8 acres and provides access to the Great Float from the River Mersey. Of the existing two river entrances, only the north locks remain operational. Tower Road, which links Birkenhead with the Seacombe area of Wallasey, divides Alfred Dock from the Great Float via a bascule bridge. This bridge is the last remaining of the former Four Bridges which crossed the dock system at this point.

Wallasey Dock

The Wallasey Dock, was a dock at Birkenhead, Wirral Peninsula, England. It opened in 1877, replacing the Great Low Water Basin, which had opened directly onto the River Mersey to the east. Situated between Alfred Dock to the north and Morpeth Dock to the south, access to the river was westwards through the Great Float. In 2001, Wallasey Dock was filled to provide space for a vehicle park at the new Twelve Quays roll on-roll off ferry terminal nearby.

German submarine U-534

German submarine U-534 was a Type IXC/40 U-boat of the Nazi German Kriegsmarine built for service during World War II. She was built in 1942 in Hamburg-Finkenwerder by Deutsche Werft AG as 'werk' 352. She was launched on 23 September 1942 and commissioned on 23 December with Oberleutnant Herbert Nollau in command. The U-boat is one of only four German WWII submarines in preserved condition remaining in the world, the only other IXC boat being U-505 in Chicago, USA.

Birkenhead Priory

Birkenhead Priory is in Priory Street, Birkenhead, Merseyside, England. It is the oldest standing building on Merseyside. The remains of the priory are a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It was founded about 1150 by Hamon de Masci, 3rd Baron of Dunham Massey for the Benedictine Order. The Priory was visited twice by Edward I due to its strategic importance being close to the borders of Wales, and also the Irish Sea.

Hamilton Square

Hamilton Square in Birkenhead, Wirral, England is a town square surrounded by Georgian terraces. No two sides of the square are identical. It was built beginning in 1826 and to the design of Edinburgh architect James Gillespie Graham. It is second only to Trafalgar Square in London for having the most Grade I listed buildings in one place in England. The land on which the square was developed was purchased in 1824 by Scottish shipbuilder William Laird (1780–1841).

Twelve Quays

The Twelve Quays ferry terminal is located on the River Mersey at Birkenhead, Wirral Peninsula, England. The terminal was opened in Summer 2002 at a cost of £25m. It is used for transporting passengers and freight between Merseyside and Belfast, Northern Ireland and Dublin, Republic of Ireland. Owned by Mersey Docks and Harbour Company, the terminal replaces facilities at Brocklebank and Canada docks at Liverpool & reduces voyage times between Liverpool and Ireland by 90 minutes.

The Argyle Theatre was a theatre in Birkenhead, on the Wirral Peninsula, England. It was opened in December 1868, initially as the Argyle Music Hall. The theatre had seating for about 800, with pillars in the auditorium and long, narrow galleries running down either side. Its name was changed in 1876 to the Prince Of Wales Theatre and for several years plays were performed, before the name "Argyle" was eventually restored. The owner and manager between 1888 and 1934 was Dennis J.

Wirral Transport Museum is a museum situated approximately 0.5 miles from the Mersey Ferry service at Woodside, Birkenhead, England. Shore Road Pumping Station

The Shore Road Pumping Station is a pumping station situated in Birkenhead, on the Wirral Peninsula, England. It contains the pumps which remove water from the railway tunnel under the River Mersey. When it was built in the 1870s the pumps were driven by steam beam engines. Electric pumps subsequently replaced the beam engines; however one of the original pumps, the 'Giant Grasshopper', remains on display.
