It would have moved the A303 into a tunnel under the Stonehenge World Heritage Site and close the A344 road. The project was designed to improve the landscape around the monument and to improve safety on the primary A303 and was part of proposals to change the site in other ways including moving the visitors centre.

Altar Stone (Stonehenge)
The Altar Stone is a central megalith at Stonehenge in England, dating to Stonehenge phase 3i, around 2600 BC. It is made of a purplish-green micaceous sandstone and is thought to have originated from outcrops of the Senni formation of the Old Red Sandstone in Wales, though this is currently in debate. Stone 80 (Altar Stone) was most recently excavated in the 1950s, but no written records of the excavation survive.
Excavations at Stonehenge
Early research[edit] The first known excavations at Stonehenge were undertaken by Dr William Harvey and Gilbert North in the early 17th century. Both Inigo Jones and the Duke of Buckingham also dug there shortly afterwards. In 1666 the antiquarian John Aubrey could still see the central sunken hollow where the Duke of Buckingham’s pit had been filled. A few minor investigations followed. Further excavations at Stonehenge were carried out by William Cunnington and Richard Colt Hoare.
Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites
Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Wiltshire, England. The WHS covers two large areas of land separated by nearly 30 miles, rather than a specific monument or building. The sites were inscribed as co-listings in 1986.
Stonehenge Cursus
The Stonehenge Cursus (sometimes known as the Greater Cursus) is a large Neolithic cursus monument next to Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England. It is roughly 3 km long and between 100 and 150m wide. Excavations in 2007 dated the construction of the earthwork to between 3630 and 3375 BC. This makes the monument several hundred years older than the earliest phase of Stonehenge in 3000 BC. The cursus is part of the National Trust's Stonehenge Landscape property.
Stonehenge Avenue
Stonehenge Avenue is an ancient avenue marked as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discovered in the 18th century, it measures nearly 3 kilometers, connecting Stonehenge with the River Avon. It was built during the Stonehenge 3 period of 2600 to 1700 BCE. The avenue is aligned with the sunrise of the summer solstice, suggesting a time of most frequent use. At the end of the Avenue, a similar ring of bluestones, Bluestonehenge, was discovered in 2009.
