Wey and Arun Canal

The Wey and Arun Canal is a 23-mile-long (37 km) canal in the south of England, between the River Wey at Shalford, Surrey and the River Arun at Pallingham, in West Sussex. The canal comprises parts of two separate undertakings – the northern part of the Arun Navigation, between Pallingham and Newbridge Wharf, which opened in 1787, and the Wey and Arun Junction Canal, which connected the Arun at Newbridge to the Godalming Navigation near Shalford, south of Guildford, opened in 1816.

The Surrey Hills is a 422 km Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), located in Surrey, England. The AONB was designated in 1958 and covers one quarter of the county of Surrey. The Surrey Hills AONB adjoins the Kent Downs AONB to the east and the Wealden portion of the former Sussex Downs AONB in the south west. The highest summit of the Surrey Hills AONB is Leith Hill near Coldharbour, at 294 metres above sea level, or 314 metres above when Leith Hill Tower is considered.

Pennthorpe School

Silent Pool

Silent Pool is a spring-fed lake at the foot of the North Downs, about 6.5 km east of Guildford in Surrey. It is managed together with the nearby Newlands Corner by the Surrey Wildlife Trust, within the privately owned Albury Estate. The outflow from Silent Pool runs into a second, adjacent, lake, Sherbourne Pond, created in the mid-seventeenth century. In turn the outflow from the Sherbourne Pond feeds the Sherbourne Brook, a tributary of the Tilling Bourne.

Oxmoor Copse

Oxmoor Copse is just south of the village of Abinger Hammer and to the west of the village of Abinger Common, in Surrey. It is 1.23 hectares and is in an AONB lying within the Surrey Hills. The previous owners gave the copse to the Woodland Trust as a gift. The copse lies on Greensand and the soil is acidic. The main trees are mature oaks and hazel; there are also bluebells. A considerable number of trees were blown down in the 1987 storm. Replanting took place in 1991.

Holmbury Hill

Holmbury Hill is the site of an Iron Age hillfort close to the village of Holmbury St. Mary in Surrey, England. Excavation of the site in 1929 by S.E. Winbolt indicated that it dated to the 1st Century AD and may have been constructed by Belgic tribes of Celts who were settling this part of Britain in the period prior to the Roman invasion of Britain. The hillfort was defended by double ramparts to the west and north with escarpments on the eastern and southern slopes.

Hascombe Hill is the site of an Iron Age hillfort close to the village of Hascombe in Surrey, England. The site was excavated in 1931 by S. E. Winbolt, who dated the occupation of the site to the 1st century BC. The hillfort encloses a thickly wooded area of approximately 2.4 hectares . The sides of the fort, which are naturally very steep, were scarped at the top to make them almost unassailable. Encircling the crest of the hill is a defensive ditch 1.5 metres deep.
