British European Airways Flight 548

British European Airways Flight 548 was a scheduled passenger flight from London Heathrow to Brussels on 18 June 1972 which crashed soon after take-off, killing all 118 people on board. The accident became known as the Staines disaster and remained the deadliest air disaster in Britain until the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988.

Langley railway station is a railway station in Langley, a suburb of Slough, Berkshire, England. Staines was a local government district from 1894 to 1974 around the town of Staines. Apart from Staines itself, it also covered Ashford, Laleham and Stanwell. The Heathrow Airside Road Tunnel (ART) is a tunnel at London Heathrow Airport. It connects the airside roads around Terminals 1, 2 and 3 to the airside roads around Terminal 5. Wraysbury Reservoir

The Wraysbury Reservoir is a water supply reservoir for London lying just west of the M25 near the village of Wraysbury and Heathrow airport. The reservoir was begun in 1967 and completed in 1970 with a capacity of 34,000 million litres. The reservoir is owned and operated by Thames Water and 400 million litres of water are pumped daily from an inlet at Datchet on the River Thames. A neighbouring reservoir is the King George VI Reservoir, opened in 1947, which is supplied from Hythe End.

Staines West railway station

Staines West railway station was a station in the town of Staines, 19 miles from central London. The station was opened on 2 November 1885 as Staines, the southern terminus of the Staines & West Drayton Railway when the London and South Western Railway refused to have a connection to its line. It was located alongside Pound Mill in Moor Lane and converted from the conveniently sited house of a mill owner. It was renamed Staines West on 26 September 1949.

Colnbrook railway station was a station on the now closed railway line between West Drayton and Staines West, on the western edge of London, England. It opened in 1884 to serve the village of Colnbrook, perhaps anticipating that one day it would grow into a larger settlement. It was located on the original route of the Great West Road, and under the present flight path near the end of one of Heathrow Airport's main runways.

Poyle Halt railway station was on the outskirts of London, on the now closed line of the Staines and West Drayton Railway. It opened on 1 June 1927 to serve the village of Poyle; originally named Stanwell Moor and Poyle Halt, it was renamed Poyle for Stanwell Moor Halt on 26 September the same year. It closed on 29 March 1965, when passenger services on the line ceased. The line north of Colnbrook remains open for goods services.

Staines Moor

Staines Moor is a Site of Special Scientific Interest at the NW corner of Surrey, England. It is around 2 km in area, and consists of rough pasture. The River Colne runs through it. It lies between Staines-upon-Thames to the south and the village of Stanwellmoor to the north. It has been common land since 1065, and registered commoners are entitled to graze stock on it. The Staines Moor SSSI also includes King George VI Reservoir which is to the east.

Colnbrook Estate Halt railway station

Colnbrook Estate Halt railway station was a station on the now closed railway line between West Drayton and Staines West, on the western edge of London, England. It was opened on 1 May 1961 by British Railways to serve the Colnbrook Industrial Estate. The station closed to passengers on 29 March 1965 following the Beeching Report and has been completely demolished although the line through its site serves an aggregate depot and a fuel depot.
