|} The River Medway and its tributaries and sub-tributaries have been used for more than 1,150 years as a source of power. There are over two hundred sites where the use of water power is known. Many different processes were performed by the use of water power:- corn milling, fulling, paper making, iron smelting, pumping water, making gunpowder, vegetable-oil extraction, and electricity generation. Hartlake disaster

The Hartlake disaster was the death of 30 hop-pickers on 20 October 1853. The Hartlake bridge is a bridge over the river Medway in Golden Green of the parish of Hadlow, Kent. In the evening of 20 October a wagon was taking about 40 hop-pickers and their families back to their campsite. A horse tripped as it was crossing the side of the bridge, the wagon collided with the side, and the bridge collapsed into the river. The river was swollen in flood.
