Howletts Wild Animal Park
Howletts Wild Animal Park (formerly known as Howletts Zoo) was set up as a private zoo in 1957 by John Aspinall near Canterbury, Kent. The animal collection was opened to the public in 1975. To give more room for the animals another estate at Port Lympne near Hythe, Kent was purchased in 1973, and opened to the public as Port Lympne Zoo in 1976.
Aylesham railway station
Aylesham railway station serves Aylesham in the English county of Kent. It is served by Southeastern. The station lies on the Canterbury East to Dover Priory line. It was built by Southern Railway on 1 July 1928 to cater for the considerable increase in passenger traffic brought about by the development of the Kent coalfield. The main modern buildings are on the London bound side of the station.
Snowdown railway station
Snowdown railway station serves Snowdown in Kent. It is served by Southeastern. The station and the line it serves were built by the London, Chatham and Dover Railway, and the station was opened in 1914. It was formerly known as "Snowdown and Nonington Halt" and had sidings that served the adjacent Snowdown colliery.
Aylesham
Aylesham is a village and civil parish 9 miles from the cathedral town of Canterbury. Aylesham has its administrative and political seat in the Dover district of Kent in England. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 3,884. The village was once associated with coal-mining. Apart from Aylesham itself the parish includes Snowdown.
Womenswold
Womenswold is a village and civil parish situated about 7 miles south-east of Canterbury, Kent, England, 1 mile to the east of the A2 road. The parish consists of three hamlets; Womenswold, Woolage Village and Woolage Green. Historically, Womenswold has been recorded with various spellings, including Wymynswold and Wimlingswold The church of St, Margaret of Antioch covers all three hamlets, and is situated in Womenswold itself.
Wingham Town railway station
Wingham Town railway station was a railway station on the East Kent Light Railway, which served the village of Wingham. It opened in 1920 and closed to passenger traffic on 30 October 1948. There was a loop when the station first opened, but this was removed when the line was extended to the Canterbury Road station in 1925. Today the site of the station is occupied by a row of private garages and the village Scout Hut.
Wingham (Canterbury Road) railway station
Wingham (Canterbury Road) railway station was a terminus on the East Kent Light Railway. It opened in 1925 (named Wingham) and closed to passenger traffic on 30 October 1948. There was a siding to the south of the road, and carriages were usually run into the station under gravity. After closure the cutting containing the station was infilled and covered with a field of crops.
Goodnestone Park
Goodnestone Park is a stately home and gardens in the southern part of the village of Goodnestone, Dover, Kent. It is approximately 7 miles from Canterbury. The palladian house was built in 1704 by Brook Bridges, 1st Baronet. His grandson, Brook Bridges' daughter, Elizabeth, married Jane Austen's brother, and Austen visited them on the estate regularly. Goodnestone House is a Grade II* listed building, enlisted on 13 October 1952.
