The Isle of Wight /ˈaɪl ɵv waɪt/ is a county and the largest island of England, located in the English Channel, on average about 3–5 miles (5-7 km) off the coast of Hampshire, separated from Great Britain (referred to by its inhabitants as "the mainland") by a strait called the Solent. It has the distinction of being England's smallest county - but for only half of the time. It has been calculated that during high tide Wight's area is slightly less than that of Rutland, but not during low tide.

The Isle of Wight Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) on the Isle of Wight, England's largest offshore island. The designated area of the AONB (189 square kilometres) covers about half of the island. The ANOB is concentrated around the south-west and north-west coastal areas and includes an area of inland downland in the island's east. It also covers about half the coastline, including both the Hamstead and Tennyson Heritage Coast areas.

Shide, Isle of Wight

Shide is a small settlement on the Isle of Wight, some of which is considered to be in the Newport conurbation. Shide Hill House, which sadly was demolished in the 1970s, was situated with its back towards St. George's Lane and Pan Chalk Pit with the reception rooms looking westwards across the Blackwater Road, river and railway to the open fields on the other side of the valley.

Blackwater (Isle of Wight) railway station

Blackwater railway station, was an intermediate station in the very centre of the island situated on the A3020 road on the line from Newport to Sandown incorporated by the Isle of Wight and Newport Junction Railway in 1868, opened in 1875 and closed 81 years later. A rural station whose “heyday was before the advent of the motor car”, during the inter-war years it was known for its large collection of enamel advertising boards.

Shide (Isle of Wight) railway station

Shide railway station, was an intermediate station at Shide on the southern fringes of Newport situated near Shide Chalk Pits on the line from Newport to Sandown incorporated by the Isle of Wight and Newport Junction Railway in 1868, opened in 1875 and closed 81 years later. A sparsely used station whose main purpose was to transport raw materials needed for the Island’s cement industry, it was doomed when production ceased during the Second World War.

The Wilderness SSSI, Isle of Wight

The Wilderness is a 12.6 hectare Site of special scientific interest which is west of Godshill on the Isle of Wight. The site was notified in 1951 due to its status as one of the only surviving pieces of peatland vegetation that remain on the Isle of Wight, and the boundary was slightly modified in 1984 to incorporate some nearby grassland.

Newclose County Cricket Ground

Newclose County Cricket Ground is the new county cricket ground for the Isle of Wight, located between Newport and Blackwater. Several open days were held in September 2008 on which special matches were to take place. At present due to planning rules the site can only be used for cricket related activities, meaning during the winter it is a redundant facility.

Standen House

Standen House is an English country house located 1 mile south of Newport, Isle of Wight. The 18th century house has a brick front and features seven-bay windows, a porch with Doric columns, and triglyph frieze. Made of brick, it is located at the base of Pan Down. To its right is situated the park of Gatcombe, which itself lies in a valley which includes the winding River Medina. Gatcombe House lies opposite Standen House, separated by the river and woods. Great East Standen Manor is nearby.
