Ardeley

Ardeley is a small village and civil parish in East Hertfordshire, England. The parish includes the hamlet of Cromer, as well as Wood End and Moor Green. Ardeley is located about one and a half miles from Walkern. It has a primary school, a pub (The Jolly Waggoner), a grade one listed church, which dates from around the 13th century, a vicarage built in the 1700s and a CSA farm (Church Farm). The farm allows visitors to buy produce and feed the animals.

The A602 is a road linking Hitchin in Hertfordshire, England, with A10 at Ware in Hertfordshire, via Stevenage. The course of the road has changed significantly since the 1960s with the construction of several bypasses and relief roads. In Hitchin, the road starts at a junction with the A505, and follows a relief road round the south of the town centre, before re-joining the course of the original route for 0.9 miles .

Benington Castle

Benington Castle is a ruined castle in the village of Benington, near Stevenage in Hertfordshire at grid reference TL296236. It was built as a motte and bailey fortress in the late 11th or early 12th century, founded by Peter de Valoignes. In 1136, Roger de Valoignes built a stone castle with a keep. In 1177, King Henry II ordered that the tower be demolished but in 1192 the castle was in use again. It was finally destroyed in 1212, after Robert Fitzwalter rebelled against King John.

Whempstead

Whempstead is a hamlet in the parish of Watton-at-Stone, situated north of Hertford and to the south-east of Stevenage in Hertfordshire. It consists of approximately 15 houses and several farms. All of the surrounding landscape is given over to agriculture. It is shown on an 1815 map of Hertfordshire. There is a former chapel now converted to a private house. There was a public house The Gate although this closed in the 1960s. It is close to the villages of Benington and Dane End.

Cromer, Hertfordshire

Cromer is a hamlet in the civil parish of Ardeley, Hertfordshire, England. It is a small hamlet, however it is noteworthy for possessing Hertfordshire's sole surviving post mill. The current mill dates from 1681 on a site where a windmill has stood for over 600 years. The mill has been damaged several times, but was brought back into full working order in 1998 after receiving grants of over £50,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and English Heritage.
