Norton, Doncaster
Norton is a civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, on the border with North Yorkshire. The northern boundary of the parish is marked by the River Went, while the Great North Road forms the western boundary. It has a population of 4,381. Norton contains the following settlements:
Brodsworth Colliery
Brodsworth Colliery was a colliery near Woodlands, South Yorkshire, England that operated from 1906, when the pit was sunk, to 1990. It was known for Woodlands, a high-quality model village constructed for its workers. The colliery was consistently amongst those that employed the most miners in Britain, employing around 2,800 workers throughout the 1980s. The pit site is soon to be redeveloped for housing.
Red House (Woodlands)
Red House is the name of junction 38 of the A1(M), where it meets the A638, 4 miles north of Doncaster and ¾ of a mile north of Woodlands, South Yorkshire, England. South of the junction, the A638 follows the route of the historic Great North Road to Doncaster. North of the junction the A1 (no longer motorway class) heads towards Barnsdale Bar and West Yorkshire. The junction is named after the farm house that stands at the junction.
Robin Hood's Well
Robin Hood's Well is at Skellow, South Yorkshire, England by the old Great North Road, in what was known as Barnsdale or Barnsdale Forest. The well was moved from its original location when the dual carriageway alongside it was built. Hence it is no longer a real well, and has a solid concrete base.
