Godmanchester Chinese Bridge

Godmanchester Chinese Bridge is a landmark of the town of Godmanchester, Huntingdonshire. It is a pedestrian bridge that spans a mill stream on the River Great Ouse and is, as the name suggests, built in an ostensibly Chinese style. The original was constructed in 1827 to designs by the architect James Gallier, but it fell into a bad condition and was replaced with a replica by the local council in 1960. The origins of the bridge are somewhat unusual.

Hinchingbrooke House

Hinchingbrooke House in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, was built around an 11th century nunnery. After the Reformation it passed into the hands of the Cromwell family, and subsequently, became the home of the Earls of Sandwich, including John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, reputedly the "inventor" of the modern sandwich. On 8 March 1538, Richard Williams (alias Cromwell) had the grant of the nunnery of Hinchinbrook, in Huntingdonshire, for the undervalued price of £19. 9s. 2d.

Huntingdon and Godmanchester

Huntingdon and Godmanchester was a municipal borough in Huntingdonshire from 1961 to 1974. It was formed in 1961 by the merger of the boroughs of Huntingdon and Godmanchester. In 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972 the borough was abolished, and a successor parish formed within Huntingdon District, in the non-metropolitan county of Cambridgeshire. The parish had the status of a town, by resolution of the parish council.
