The Caroni River is the largest river in Trinidad and Tobago, running for 40 km from its origins in the Northern Range on the island of Trinidad, through the northern lowlands of the Caroni Plains and enters the Gulf of Paria at the Caroni Swamp. The Caroni and its tributaries drain one of the most densely populated part of Trinidad, the "East-West Corridor", and also provides most of its drinking water through the Caroni-Arena Dam.

Barataria falls under the San Juan-Laventille Regional Corporation. San Juan is a town in Trinidad and Tobago. It lies in North Eastern Trinidad, between Barataria and St. Joseph. It is a busy town in the East-West Corridor; the centre of town is known as the Croisee. Population is 54,900 (2004), and it is the third city of the country, larger than the capital. San Juan is governed by the San Juan-Laventille Regional Corporation. Pronounced "Sahwah" by the local people, San Juan is the first major along the East-West Corridor by maxi-taxis and buses.

Formerly, a slum called rat town, the community evolved as a residential area to some extent. The area still has squatters living in the vicinity. In 2008-9 the government built a four foot (1.2m) high wall around the 'gardens'.
