Eurovision Song Contest 1956
The Eurovision Song Contest 1956 was the first edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, held at the Teatro Kursaal in Lugano, Switzerland. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union, the pan-European music competition was an inspiration of the Italian Sanremo Music Festival. Lohengrin Filipello hosted the first contest which lasted approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Lake Lugano
Lake Lugano (Italian: Lago di Lugano or Ceresio) is a glacial lake which is situated on the border between south-east Switzerland and Italy. The lake, named after the city of Lugano, is situated between Lake Como and Lago Maggiore. It was cited for the first time by Gregory of Tours with the name Ceresio in 590 AD, a name which is said to have derived from the Latin word cerasus, meaning cherry, and refers to the abundance of cherry trees which at one time adorned the shores of the lake.

Canton of Lugano
Lugano was the name of a canton of the Helvetic Republic from 1798 to 1803, with its capital at Lugano. The canton unified the former Landvogteien of Lugano, Mendrisio, Locarno and Valmaggia. Cornaredo Stadium
Cornaredo Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Lugano, Switzerland. It is used mostly for football matches. It is a home ground of AC Lugano. The stadium is able to hold 15,000 people and was built in 1951. The stadium has 5,000 seats and 10,000 standing places. During the 1954 FIFA World Cup, it hosted one game. During the spring 2008, the political authorities of Lugano announced a plan to renew the stadium to fulfil the Swiss Football League requirements for Super League stadiums.

Viganello
Viganello is a quarter of the city of Lugano, Switzerland. Viganello was formerly a municipality of its own, having been incorporated into Lugano in 2004. It was first recorded in 1300 as de Viganello. The municipality also contained the village Albonago. It had 238 inhabitants in 1783, which increased to 244 in 1808, 319 in 1850, 1477 in 1910, 2163 in 1950 and 5587 in 1990.

The name Pregassona comes from a contraction of the local dialect for "near the Cassone"; the Cassone is a small river that flows through the village.

Brè-Aldesago is a quarter of the city of Lugano, in the Swiss canton of Ticino. It occupies the slopes and summit of Monte Brè, and contains the mountain villages of Brè, to the east of the summit, and Aldesago, to the west. It has an area of 420 hectares and, in 2011, it had a population of 1,055. Historically, Brè-Aldesago was an independent municipality, known simply as Brè until 1953.

Cureggia
Cureggia is a quarter of the city of Lugano, Switzerland. Cureggia was formerly a municipality of its own, having been incorporated into Lugano in 2004. It was first recorded in 1329 as Curezia. The municipality had 62 inhabitants in 1799, which decreased to 53 in 1850, 47 in 1900 and 24 in 1950. It then increased again, to 112 in 2000.

The Cathedral of Saint Lawrence (Italian: Cattedrale di San Lorenzo) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Lugano, Ticino, Switzerland. It was founded in the High Middle Ages but rebuilt in the late 15th century, with the facade completed in 1517. It is dedicated to Saint Lawrence of Rome.
Swiss National Supercomputing Centre
The Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (Italian: Centro Svizzero di Calcolo Scientifico; CSCS) is the national high-performance computing centre of Switzerland. It was founded in Manno, canton Ticino, in 1991. In March 2012, CSCS moved to its new location in Lugano-Cornaredo. CSCS' main function is a so-called National User Lab. It is open to all Swiss researchers and their collaborators, who can get free access to CSCS' supercomputers in a competitive scientific evaluation process.
Lugano railway station
Lugano railway station (Italian: Stazione di Lugano) is the main railway station of the city of Lugano, in the Swiss canton of Ticino. The station is on the Gotthard railway, and is also the terminus of the metre gauge Lugano–Ponte Tresa Railway (FLP) and the Lugano Città–Stazione funicular. The FLP terminus is across the station forecourt from the main line station, and is often regarded as a separate station, by the name of Lugano FLP.

The Lugano Città–Stazione funicular, or Funicolare Lugano Città–Stazione, is a funicular railway in the city of Lugano in the Swiss canton of Ticino. The line's upper station is located within the main railway station of Lugano, and the lower station is on Piazza Cioccaro in the historic city centre below. It is one of the busiest funicular lines in Switzerland, carrying 2.4 million passengers in 2007.
Monte Brè funicular
The Monte Brè funicular, or Funicolare Cassarate - Monte Brè, is a funicular railway in the city of Lugano in the Swiss canton of Ticino. The line links a lower station in the Lugano suburb of Cassarate with an upper station at the summit of the Monte Brè. The top yields views of the city and Lake Lugano. The funicular is composed of two separate and independent sections. The first section links the stops of Cassarate and Suvigliana and is only 196 metres long.
Aldesago
Aldesago is a village on the western slopes of the mountain of Monte Brè, in the Swiss canton of Ticino. Politically the village forms part of the Brè-Aldesago quarter of the city of Lugano, although until 1972 Brè-Aldesago was an independent municipality. Aldesago is accessed by a steep and winding road from Lugano. This road then crosses the southern slopes of Monte Brè to reach the village of Brè.
Besso, Ticino
Besso is a quarter of the city of Lugano, in the Swiss canton of Ticino. It forms the part of the city which is uphill of Lugano railway station, and is separated from the city centre by that station and its rail approaches. Besso was developed as a residential area in the late nineteenth century, driven by the opening of the railway in 1882. By 2011, it had a population of 4,993.
Castagnola-Cassarate
Castagnola-Cassarate is a quarter of the city of Lugano, in the Swiss canton of Ticino. Until 1972, it was an independent municipality under the name Castagnola. Castagnola-Cassarate includes the waterfront on the north side of Lake Lugano from the outfall of the Cassarate River in the west, continuing under Monte Brè to a border with Gandria in the east.
Loreto, Switzerland
Loreto is a quarter of the city of Lugano, in the Swiss canton of Ticino. It forms the part of the city which surrounds the shrine of Our Lady of Loreto to the south of the city center, and includes the Lake Lugano waterfront south of the city centre but north of Paradiso. In 2011, it had a population of 3,221.

Cassarate (river)
The Cassarate is a river of the Swiss canton of Ticino. It rises in the upper part of the Val Colla, on the slopes of Monte Gazzirola and the San Lucio Pass. It flows into Lake Lugano at Lugano. On its way downstream, the river flows through, or forms the boundary of, the municipalities of Bogno, Valcolla, Certara, Cimadera, Sonvico, Capriasca, Canobbio and Cadro, before reaching the city of Lugano.
