Summary

This Stockholm cemetery was created between 1917 and 1920 by two young architects, Asplund and Lewerentz, on the site of former gravel pits overgrown with pine trees. The design blends vegetation and architectural elements, taking advantage of irregularities in the site to create a landscape that is finely adapted to its function. It has had a profound influence in many countries of the world.

Skogskyrkogården: A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Stockholm County, Sweden

Skogskyrkogården, also known as the Woodland Cemetery, is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Stockholm County, Sweden. It is renowned for its unique architectural design, serene natural surroundings, and its significance as a burial ground that reflects the principles of functionalism and modernism.

History

The idea for Skogskyrkogården was conceived in the early 20th century when Stockholm faced a shortage of burial grounds. In 1912, a competition was held to design a new cemetery, and the winning proposal was submitted by architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz. Construction began in 1917, but due to financial constraints and World War I, the project faced delays and was finally completed in 1920.

The architects aimed to create a cemetery that harmonized with the natural landscape, blending architecture and nature seamlessly. They envisioned a place where people could find solace and tranquility while paying their respects to their loved ones. Skogskyrkogården became a symbol of the modernist movement, emphasizing simplicity, functionality, and a connection to nature.

Architecture and Design

Skogskyrkogården's design is characterized by its integration with the surrounding forest and its use of natural materials. The architects carefully selected the location to take advantage of the existing topography, incorporating hills, valleys, and trees into the design. The cemetery is divided into two main sections: the older northern part, designed by Asplund, and the southern part, designed by Lewerentz.

The Northern Chapel, designed by Asplund, is a striking example of modernist architecture. Its simple, geometric forms and clean lines reflect the functionalist principles of the time. The chapel's interior features a beautiful mosaic by Swedish artist Einar Forseth, depicting the cycle of life and death.

The Woodland Chapel, designed by Lewerentz, is a more intimate space, nestled among the trees. Its design incorporates natural materials such as granite and wood, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The chapel's interior is adorned with delicate stained glass windows, designed by Lewerentz himself, which filter soft, colored light into the space.

Current State

Skogskyrkogården continues to serve as an active cemetery, providing a final resting place for thousands of individuals. Its serene atmosphere and thoughtful design make it a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking solace and reflection.

The cemetery is also a cultural and educational site, hosting various events and exhibitions throughout the year. Visitors can explore the grounds, visit the chapels, and learn about the history and significance of Skogskyrkogården through guided tours and informational displays.

Skogskyrkogården's UNESCO World Heritage status, granted in 1994, recognizes its exceptional universal value as a cultural site. It stands as a testament to the innovative architectural and design principles of the early 20th century, as well as the importance of creating spaces that honor the deceased while providing solace and comfort to the living.

Skogskyrkogården is not only a burial ground but also a place of beauty, tranquility, and historical significance. Its unique architectural design and integration with nature make it a must-visit destination for those interested in modernist architecture, cultural heritage, and the celebration of life and death.
