Geography of Samoa

The independent country of Samoa consists of the two large islands of Upolu and Savai'i and 8 smaller islands located about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand in the Polynesian region of the South Pacific. The island of Upolu is home to nearly three-quarters of Samoa's population and its capital city of Apia. The climate is tropical, with a rainy season from November to April. Savai'i

Savaiʻi is the largest and highest island in Samoa and the Samoa Islands chain. It is also the biggest landmass in Polynesia outside Hawaii and New Zealand. The island of Savai'i is also referred to by Samoans as Salafai, a classical Samoan term used in oratory and prose. The island is home to 43,142 people (2006 Census) who make up 24% of the country's population. The only township and ferry terminal is Salelologa, the main entry point to the island, situated at the east end of Savai'i.

Gaga'ifomauga is a political district on the island of Savai'i in Samoa. The district is situated on the northern side of the island with a population of 4,770 (2001 Census). Gaga'ifomauga district include the village communities of Aopo, Lefagaoali'i, Manase, Safune, Safotu, Samauga and Sasina. The main village in the district was traditionally Aopo. Manase, Safotu, Sasina and Safune are situated by the sea.

Gaga'emauga is an electoral district on the island of Savai'i in Samoa. The district is situated on the central north side of Savai'i. The name Gaga'emauga literally means: “near side of the mountain” meaning the eastern side of the mountain chain running through the centre of Savai'i. The traditional centre of the district is Saleaula, where the district chiefs and orators meet at Vaitu’utu’u malae.

Aopo

Aopo is a village on the island of Savai'i in Samoa. It is in the political district of Gaga'ifomauga. The village is located inland from the north coast of Savai'i, close to the main lava field from the island's volcanic cones. There is an Aopo Conservation Area open to visitors and the trail starts at the east end of the village. Hikers can ascend Mt Silisili, Samoa's highest peak, from Aopo. In 2007, Aopo village sold its teak plantation to Blue Bird Lumber.

Patamea is a village on the island of Savai'i in Samoa. While most villages on Savai'i are situated near the sea, Patamea is situated inland, away from the coast. The village is in the Gaga'emauga political district near the central north coast of the island. Heading north west on the main road from Salelologa township and ferry terminal, the turnoff to Patamea is just before Samalae'ulu village at a T-junction of the road.

Mount Matavanu

Mt Matavanu is an active volcano on the island of Savai'i in Samoa. The most recent eruptions from Matavanu occurred between 1905 - 1911 with lava flows on its northern side flowing towards the island's coastline and into the sea in the district of Gaga'emauga. The eruptions began 4 August 1905 and stopped in November 1911. The lava flowed over 40 square miles of countryside to the lagoon and reef, destroying villages in its path between Samalae'ulu to the east and Saleaula to the west.

Mata o le Afi is a volcano on the island of Savai'i in the South Pacific nation of Samoa. Mata o le Afi translates from the Samoan language as Eye of the Fire or Source of the Fire. The most recent eruption of Mata o le Afi occurred from 30 October 1902 to 17 November 1902. Other volcanoes on Savai'i include Mt Matavanu and Mauga Afi. In Samoan mythology the god of earthquakes is Mafui'e.

Mauna Afi is a volcanic mountain on the island of Savai'i in Samoa. Its name means Burning Mountain or Mountain of Fire, from the Samoan language mauga (mountain) and afi (fire). The most recent eruption of Mauga Afi was around 1725. {cn}} The island of Savai'i consists of a massive shield volcano and is still volcanically active. Other volcanoes on Savai'i include Mt Silisili, the highest mountain in Samoa and Mt Matavanu.
