Heerlen
Heerlen is a city and a municipality in the southeastern Netherlands. The municipality is the second largest in the province of Limburg. It forms part of Parkstad Limburg, (formerly known as "Oostelijke Mijnstreek"), an agglomeration of about 220,000 inhabitants. After its early Roman beginnings and a rather modest medieval period, Heerlen became a centre for the coal mining industry in the Netherlands in the late 19th century.
Bernardinuscollege
Bernardinuscollege is a comprehensive school in Heerlen, the Netherlands. The school was founded by Franciscan monks in 1911 as ‘Sint-Bernardinus, R.K. Hoogere Burgerschool met 3-jarige cursus’ (‘Saint Bernardinus, R.C. Higher Citizenschool with 3-year course’), because of the need for education in the wake of the blooming mining industry. In September 1913 the first students arrived.
Welten
Welten is a village in Heerlen, still retaining its village like appearance. A couple of landmarks remain in Welten, including a church dating back to the 11th century though restored in the 19th century, and the Weltermolen (Weltermill), a watermill powered by the Geleenbeek. The Weltermolen dates back to at least the 14th century.
Jan Stuyt
Jan Stuyt (21 August 1868, Purmerend - 11 July 1934, The Hague) was a Dutch architect. Stuyt started his architectural career in 1883 at the office of A.C. Bleys (1842-1912), whose neo-Romanesque style would become of great influence on Stuyt. In 1891 Stuyt joined the Cuypers office in Amsterdam, where he became an overseer of the building of the Cathedral of Saint Bavo in Haarlem between 1895 and 1898.
Weltermolen, Welten
The Weltermolen (literally Weltermill) is a watermill located in Welten, Heerlen in the Netherlands. It is fed by the Geleenbeek, with some extra force created by a largely man-made pond. The Weltermolen wasn't a watermill until the start of the 20th century. During WWII (approximately 1943) the waterwheel was taken out of action and an electrical motor took over. The mill was already mentioned in the 14th century and it has a strong connection with Huis Strijthagen.
Oliemolen, Heerlen
The Oliemolen (literally Oilmill) is a 16th-century watermill located at the foot of a steep hill in the Aambos, Heerlen in the Netherlands. The name already tells us much about its function, extracting oil, but this was not always the case, it first function as a volmolen (a mill to press wool). The mill is fed by the Caumerbeek. A copy, dating to May 31, 1710, of the original deed exists, indicating the mill was founded on May 9, 1502, commissioned by the family Van Scheasberg.
Former V&D Heerlen
The former V&D in Heerlen was designed by Frits Peutz (best known for the Glaspaleis) in 1958 as part of the store chain Vroom & Dreesmann (located in Heerlen since 1920). The interior design was done by Mr. Kober and his daughter Marcia and the builders were E. Joosten and L. Reumkens. The director in Heerlen was Adrianus Merkx. The building was relatively different for Heerlen, although used to modern architecture, this building was described as skyscraper like (10 storeys high).
Ambachtsschool, Heerlen
The Ambachtsschool in Heerlen is a brick building with distinctive layers of marl (a stone commonly found in the south of Limburg). It is notable as one of the earliest vocational schools in the Netherlands. The building is located on the Burgemeester de Hesselleplein (formerly known as the Lindeplein), in Heerlen.
